Magic Millions’ evolution as a key player in the Adelaide Cup lead-up and carnival takes another giant step forward tomorrow via the inaugural Magic Millions SA 3 & 4YO Classic at Murray Bridge.

The new $122,250 race has attracted a solid field, comprising locals and Victorians, with the Tony and Calvin McEvoy barn having a particularly strong hand via early favourite Yulong Justify ($3.70 at Sportsbet) and stablemates Zoist ($6) and Strike Eagle ($11).

The 1400m event is a strong support act for the second renewal of the $202,250 Magic Millions 2YO Classic at Murray Bridge and Racing SA says the addition of a dedicated race for 3YOs and 4YOs should boost the annual Magic Million yearling sales.

“We know that a significant number of two-year-old Magic Millions runners are bred for speed and run accordingly, but this new race promises to provide a different option for some horses, their owners and trainers,” said Racing SA CEO Nick Redin.

“It gives incentive to buyers at the upcoming sale to look for horses that will get over further distances.

“It’s a win for breeders and a win for owners.”

The 2YO feature was last year moved from its traditional Adelaide Cup Day slot to become the centrepiece of the new Magic Millions day at Murray Bridge.

The state’s metropolitan meeting is on the Morphettville Parks track Saturday week, two days before the showcase Adelaide Cup meeting on Monday, March 14.

While the McEvoy stable has gang tackled tomorrow’s inaugural 3&4YO Classic, another local stable could hold the key to the race.

Another Award, trained by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, was outstanding first up over 1000m at Morphettville Parks and from barrier two should get a gun run for jockey Jessica Eaton, who is forging a solid partnership with the stable.
