The chestnut colt tracked pacesetter Dean's List (Speightstown) through fractions of :23.47 and :47.77. The pacesetter tried to open up on the even-money favorite nearing the stretch, but Morello reeled in the longtime leader and put that scrappy foe away with a furlong to run before striding clear to an easy victory. Dean's List was second and Golden Code (Honor Code) was third. The time for the mile was 1:39.28. A $140,000 KEENOV weanling and $200,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase purchase, Morello sold for $250,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale. He opened his career with a six-furlong win at Aqueduct Nov. 27 and came back to score a five-length victory in the Feb. 6 Jimmy Winkfield S. last time out. Morello is one of three stakes winners from the first crop of Classic Empire and the stallion's first graded victor.
