Following a thorough examination of the infrastructure at the Cranbourne greyhound racing track, GRV, in conjunction with the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club, has evaluated several interim options to reopen the track.

“GRV remains absolutely committed to the redevelopment of the track, however the associated costs and timeframe to return the current track to an acceptable safety standard for racing and trialling in the short term are prohibitive, given the inherent risks associated with the existing, aged infrastructure,” said GRV (Acting) CEO Stuart Laing.

“This means in the short term the track will remain closed as we start planning for track redevelopment so we can recommence trailing and racing in the safest environment,” he said.

In the coming months, GRV and the Cranbourne GRC will consult with club members, local participants, track users, GOTBA, GCV, Clubs and the Cranbourne Recreation Reserve user groups on redeveloping the track in its current location, which will include seeking feedback on potential track designs and race distances.

The consultation process is also likely to consider improving training facilities in the local area.

“The Cranbourne region is home to the largest greyhound racing participant population and the second largest greyhound population in Victoria. GRV is absolutely committed to greyhound racing in Cranbourne, and we look forward to an even more exciting and dynamic future for the sport in this region,” said Mr Laing.
