Zipping wins the Sandown Classic

Living Legends have advised that four-time Sandown Classic winner Zipping has died this morning due to a paddock accident.

The 20-year-old gelding won over $4.5 million in prizemoney for owners Lloyd & Nick Williams, including 16 individual victories.

It is with deep sadness that we share with you this morning that Zipping has passed away.

The son of Danehill won two Group 1 races in 2010, while he dominated the Group 2 Sandown Classic – now known as the Zipping Classic – winning the 2400m feature in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

After retiring in the summer of 2011, Zipping lived out the rest of his days at the Living Legends farm, where he shared a paddock with former stablemate Efficient.

Living Legends posted on Twitter saying that the champion galloper had passed away due to an irreparable leg fracture as a result of a paddock accident, which resulted in him being humanely euthanised.

“The Living Legends team are truly devastated by this tragic accident, he will be sorely missed by his paddock mate Fish,” they wrote.

“Our condolences go out to Zip’s owners Lloyd and Nick Williams and all at @MacedonLodge.”

Zipping raced in four Cox Plates, finishing in the minor money on three occasions, while he also finished fourth in the 2006 Melbourne Cup.

The cult figure won races between 1300m and 2500m and raced from 2004 until 2011.
