Fetlock injury forces Miami Fleiss retirement

Speedy Queensland mare Miami Fleiss has been retired after just nine race starts.

The Tony Gollan-trained four-year-old won five of her nine starts, while she also finished runner-up on one occasion and most recently ran fourth in the Magic Millions QTIS Open on the Gold Coast behind Wisdom Of Water and Boomnova.

The mare by Spirit Of Boom was owned by powerhouse Queensland-based syndicate Black Soil Bloodstock, who posted on Instagram on Monday afternoon an announcement regarding her premature retirement.

“Today we celebrate the career of star mare Miami Fleiss who we have had to retire from racing,” the post read.

“An issue with her fetlock made racing too great a risk to continue, so in conjunction with @tjgollanracing, we’ve decided to prepare her for her next career as a broodmare.

“She gave our ownership group a wonderful ride, all the more special as she was the first racehorse for many of them.

“After am early scare when she badly injured herself in a jumpout incident as a 2yo, she returned as a 3yo to win by 7 lengths on debut. She then produced a WFA performance rating of 100 which only few Qld horses have achieved within 2 career starts.”

The talented sprinter won over $430,000 in prizemoney, with a career highlight being her victory in the Listed Spirit Of Boom Classic (1200m) at Doomben in December, 2021.

Miami Fleiss’ dam, Madame Fly, was also owned by Black Soil Bloodstock, but she passed away during the birth of Miami Fleiss’ full sister last year, so the syndicate are hoping that their recently-retired galloper can carry on that legacy.
