This Saturday’s metropolitan meeting in Victoria is set be held at Bendigo Jockey Club, where some big fields have been assembled for Golden Mile Day. The track has come up a Good 4 and the rail is in the true position, and with no distinct pattern being evident in recent meetings at Bendigo, each runner should get their chance if they’re good enough. Here are our top tips for the day, with odds from Australia’s best online bookmakers.

GOLDEN MILE TIP: CHERRY TORTONI

The Listed Golden Mile over 1600m is the feature event of the day and we expect the Patrick Payne-trained Cherry Tortoni to be the one to walk away with the main part of the $200,00 prize pool. He stormed home for third in The Mugatoo at Flemington on March 19 when beaten a half-length by the in-form duo of Gentleman Roy and Bermadez. The mile is clearly his pet distance having not missed the placings in five runs at the trip and with two wins to his name already, we anticipate he will appreciate the big surrounds of Bendigo and be the one flashing home late. His turn of foot is arguably the best in the race and despite drawing barrier 18, his get-back-and-run-on pattern defies the tricky draw. Michael Dee sticks on board which is a massive bonus and with a similar finish as to what he showed at Flemington, the $4.60 on offer from Unibet looks too good to pass up.

BEST BET AT BENDIGO: CARDIGAN QUEEN

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Cardigan Queen arguably should have won her last start when flashing home for second in the final event on All Star Mile Day. The Sebring filly was nosed out by Fortunate Kiss who arguably should have won the Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley on March 25. The form her last start was still franked at The Valley with Daisies, who finished two lengths off Cardigan Queen coming out and subsequently winning the Alexandra Stakes. Those type of form lines read simply too good for some of Cardigan Queen’s rivals on Saturday and if she produces anything near what she showed at Flemington, then the chestnut filly looks a clear best bet of the day.

NEXT BEST AT BENDIGO: POINT NEPEAN

One of our better bets of the day comes up in the opening event of the day when the Robert Hickmott-trained Point Nepean steps out over 2400m. The four-year-old Camelot colt was run down in the shadows of the winning post at Sandown when resuming off a five-month spell. Having been pipped on the line last time out, he looks the one to beat here, especially if he has taken natural improvement from that first up-effort. Alana Kelly sticks on board and following her 2kg claim, Point Nepean is set to lug just 52kg on his back. The bay colt looks set to gain an uncontested lead out in front and in doing should gain a quiet sectional or two and should prove too hard to run down. The $3.60 on offer from Ladbrokes looks to be a steal.

Next BestRace 1 – Point Nepean (#9) $3.60 with Ladbrokes

BEST VALUE AT BENDIGO: PERFECT WORLD

Perfect World from the Anthony & Sam Freedman stable is set to resume off a four-month spell and brings strong form lines to the race, despite being a $9 chance with online betting sites. The four-year-old mare wasn’t beaten far in the Group 3 Summoned Stakes when chasing home Steinem and Quantum Mechanic in the spring and that looks the form to follow in this. She has a win and a minor placing to her name when resuming and with two wins and a runner-up effort from three starts at the 1400m, she looks to be a great value play. From barrier two, Damien Thornton will look to track the speed throughout and with even luck, Perfect World has the appropriate turn of foot to take out a race like this.

Best ValueRace 5 – Perfect World (#10) $9 with Bet365
