Western Australia’s feature two-year-old race – the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate – will be run and won at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, April 2. The extremely smart Amelia’s Jewel is looking to remain undefeated when she lines up as an odds-on favourite with online bookmakers for the $500,000 event.

HorseBetting’s WA racing analyst presents you with his top tip in the feature race, as well as his best bets and quaddie selections for the remainder of the afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail will be out 6m for the entire course, and racing is set to get underway at 12:22pm AWST (3:22pm AEDT).

Karrakatta Plate Top Tip – Amelia’s Jewel

In the Group 2 feature on Saturday afternoon, the Simon Miller-trained Amelia’s Jewel will be carrying the hopes of a nation when she lines up as a $1.65 favourite with Bet365. The filly by Siyouni is two from two to kick off her career, with both victories at this track in dominant fashion. On debut, Amelia’s Jewel gave her rivals a galloping lesson in the Listed Supremacy Stakes, recording a 2.17-length victory, before winning the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes over 1100m by 2.47 lengths on March 19. The rise to 1200m looks to suit her even more on Saturday. While barrier 17 looks and sounds ugly, she has got back towards the rear of the field in both of her wins and she’s been able to round her rivals up in two or three strides, so we cannot see it causing any problems on Saturday. Include her in your multis, punters.

Ascot Best Bet – Harmeka

In race two, two absolute winning machines in Harmeka and Metallon meet each other once again after finishing second and first respectively at this track over 1000m on March 2. On that occasion, Metallon got the better of Harmeka by just under a length, but now our best bet meets that runner 1.5kg better at the weights and has drawn much kinder in barrier two. The Adam Durrant-trained Harmeka has had five starts for two wins and three minor placings, and comes into this off the back of a pretty comfortable win over 1200m on March 16. From barrier two, Lucy Warwick will take the three-year-old filly forward and look to land in a stalking role, following her main market rival wherever he goes. It looks to be a race in two, but we are confident that Harmeka can turn the tables on Saturday.

Ascot Next Best – Otheroneson

In-form jockey Chris Parnham combines with the Danny Morton-trained Otheroneson in a Benchmark 66+ over 1400m. The three-year-old gelding was beaten by Harmeka last start over 1200m when starting a similar odds-on quote, and although he led throughout, he just got out-sprinted late when first-up off a short freshen. Morton has quickly stepped the son of Demerit back out to 1400m where he was a winner over in January, while barrier two is going to allow the gelding to stride forward and take up the running. Dropping from 60kg to 55kg is another big advantage for this handy galloper, who looks to get all of the favours in his quest to return to the winner’s circle.

Ascot Best Value – Wee Ripper

In the las race of the afternoon, Justine Erkelens and Jason Whiting combine with Wee Ripper, a seven-year-old gelding by Blackfriars. The old-timer is lining up in his 40th race start on Saturday, where he will be hoping to bring up win number six. Coming off a three-length second to Alaskan God – the WATC Derby favourite – when carrying 60kg at this course and trip on March 13 should be the right form line for a Rating 66+ Handicap. Wee Ripper drops right down to 55.5kg for this event, and once again he is drawn quite well in barrier eight in this 13-horse field. With some cover along the back and into the bend, he will be making his presence felt in the concluding stages of the race.
