First Race 11:20am AEST

Visit Ladbrokes

It is a real crash-back-down-to-earth type of feel in Sydney on Saturday as we go from Group 1 racing to a 10-race program with no black-type events at Randwick. As expected, we will be once again racing on a Heavy 8 surface, while the rail is out 11m from the 1000m to the winning post and then out 8m for the remainder of the course. HorseBetting’s NSW racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting, which is set to begin at 11:20am AEST.

Best Bet at Randwick – Aleas

Fish where the fish are, and that is generally wherever James McDonald is. The bloke is a genius on horseback and his book of rides on Saturday suggest that. In race four, McDonald hops aboard the Chris Waller-trained Aleas, who has raced just once in Australia, finishing fourth behind O’President, Taksu and Rustic Steel in a Benchmark 88. That looks to be the right form for a race like this, given that the son of Archipenko’s best form is out over a bit further, so the rise from 1400m to 1800m should be ideal. From barrier seven, the four-year-old is likely to get back in the run again, but he can be finishing over the top of them under JMac.

Next Best at Randwick – O’President

If you thought we were joking – we weren’t. Waller and McDonald combine a few times throughout the afternoon, but we are hoping that Aleas can frank the O’President form in race four to build our confidence ahead of the ninth. O’President showed potential as a two-year-old but he didn’t really go on with it in the spring, before running plainly behind the flying Mazu in the Listed Fireball Stakes early in the autumn. The son of Fastnet Rock silenced any doubters in the win at Newcastle, sitting up on speed and giving a strong kick over the 1400m to win by three-quarters of a length. He does rise 3kg from that win, but James McDonald goes in the saddle and they’ve drawn kindly in the two alley to get that soft on-speed run again. He is ready to win again before a trip to Brisbane beckons.

Best Value at Randwick – Dragonstone

Andermatt is going to take plenty of beating after trouncing his rivals by six lengths last time out. One of those rivals – the runner-up in face – was Dragonstone from the Mark Newnham stable. When they met, they both carried 57kg, but Dragonstone now meets Andermatt 6kg better after Tyler Schiller’s claim, so we would not be surprised to see the three-year-old son of Mikki Isle turn the table on the race favourite. Dragonstone was accepted in the Mick Dittman Plate in Brisbane, but Newnham opted to stay in Sydney, which has to be a bit of a push as well. He needs to improve quite a bit given the favourite will have plenty of upside, but the 6kg swing is enough to entertain us.
