Favourites Oblige on FWD Champions Day

There were no surprises among the winners on Sunday's FWD Champions Day program at Sha Tin Racecourse, as the betting favourites in each of the afternoon's three Group 1 affairs each won with a fair bit of authority.

The closest thing to a surprise on the afternoon was the starting price of BMW Hong Kong Derby hero Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) in the FWD QE II Cup, but the 4-5 pick had them all over a barrel when all was said and done, becoming the first to complete the Derby/QE II double since Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) in 2016 with a stirring two-length victory for new dad Karis Teetan. A 300,000gns purchase by the HKJC team headed up by Mick Kinane at Tattersalls October in 2019, Romantic Warrior is the second graduate of the Hong Kong International Sale to succeed in the QE II in the last five years, joining former 'TDN Rising Star' Pakistan Star (Ger).

The Derby form was also on display in the FWD Champions Mile, where that race's runner-up California Spangle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) was best-backed to be the fly in the ointment for Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro). But at the end of the 1600 metres, the 2-5 jolly proved far too strong in defence of his title, also racing away by two lengths and in so doing, becoming the richest horse in Hong Kong racing history at better than HK$116 million.

Wellington (Aus) (All Too Hard {Aus}) offered favorite-backers a whopping 19-10, but never looked a loser when defending his crown in the G1 Chairman's Sprint Prize and solidifying his position as Hong Kong's top sprinter.
