The Adelaide Racing Carnival officially gets underway on Saturday afternoon with a nine-race card at Morphettville. The Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) for the three-year-old fillies is the feature event of the day, with $502,250 on the line. Perfect racing conditions greet us with the track coming up a Good 4 and the rail returning to the true position, while the first race is set to jump at 11:52am ACST (12:22pm AEST).

NB: Races 1-4 and 8-9 will be run on the Parks track

Race 1: BM68 Handicap (1400m)

Australasian Oaks Day kicks off with a BM68 affair over 1400m and we’re hoping Chill With Teejay can make it three wins on the trot, following a smart win at Terang. Having begun a touch awkwardly on that day, the Delago Deluxe mare still managed to settle one pair off the speed and managed to track into the race perfectly before letting down with a strong finishing burst. From barrier eight, under Lachie Neindorf, she will need a bit of luck in gaining a spot with cover close to the speed. If she can land in the one-one, or two pairs back with cover, her turn of foot is too good for a field like this and Chill With Teejay should be bringing up a third win in as many starts.

Race 2: BM60 Handicap (1250m)

Our best bet of the day comes up nice and early on Saturday, as the David Jolly-trained She’s A Toff looks to build off her dominant first-up win at Oakbank on April 18. With that being her first run back from a near 12-month layoff, you would expect she would only improve from what she did first-up when she steps out over 1250m here on Saturday. We expect the plan to be similar to her win last time out, jump cleanly from the barriers, find the rail, use Sophie Logan’s 2kg claim to her advantage and give her rivals something to chase down. She’s A Toff looks to gain an uncontested lead throughout and with a win already to her name when second-up we expect that perfect record to remain intact. The $3 with online betting sites is too hard to pass up.

Race 3: BM78 Handicap (1000m)

Next up is a BM78 event over the 1000m scamper and we’ll be hoping the Jim Conlan-trained Madame Bolli can return to winning ways. On her day, the four-year-old mare is a speedy conveyance, but we are yet to see the absolute best out of her in three runs this time in. Last campaign, she managed to win three times in five races, showing that she has what it takes to put it all together on a regular basis. With more early speed in this, than the start of an F1 race, the race looks perfectly set up for someone like Madame Bolli to take a sit off the speed and be charging through the line late and taking advantage of some vulnerable leaders. We’re happy to load into $10 available with Bet365.

Race 4: H.C. Nitschke Stakes (1400m)

The Listed H.C. Nitschke Stakes is the first of the Stakes races on Saturday and following a demolition job at Oakbank last time out, we expect Defining to continue on her winning ways. The Not a Single Doubt filly from the Tony & Calvin McEvoy yard gave her rivals a start and a beating when cruising to five-length victory on April 16, despite giving her opposition a big start on the home turn. Despite the low draw in barrier four, we expect Barend Vorster to have the chestnut filly settled towards the rear of the field. If Defining can reproduced a similar finishing burst as she did at Oakbank, it may just prove to be the defining factor in this.

Race 5: Breeders’ Stakes (1200m)

One of our better bets of the day See You In Heaven is set to step out over the 1200m in the Group 3 Breeders Stakes and clearly looks to be one of the better bets of the day. The Divine Prophet filly appreciated taking a sit off the leaders in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes and was the one who finished the best to bring up an impressive win when second-up from a spell. Prior to that win, she chased home the smart Bistro in the Cinderella Stakes and you would think if she is anywhere near those type of efforts, See You In Heave should simply prove too good for this lot.

Race 6: Chairman’s Stakes (2000m)

The Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes opens the quaddie on Saturday afternoon and we’re hoping the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained Son Of Emperor can bring up a third successive win. The So You Think colt managed to grind out a tough win at Caulfield over the mile when settling up on speed and ultimately outstaying his rivals. The step up to 2000m looks ideal and despite not necessarily having a strong turn of foot, he looks like he will stay all day. Jamie Kah sticking on board is a massive bonus and if they can gain a couple of sectionals out in front, then Son Of Emperor looks the one to run down at a nice price.

Race 7: Australasian Oaks (2000m)

The Australasian Oaks is the first of four Group 1 races set to be run in Adelaide over the next four weeks and with a capacity field of 16 fillies set to face the starter, the 2022 edition looks to be as open as ever. The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained My Whisper heads the market at $4.40.

Race 8: City Of Adelaide Handicap (1400m)

We head back to the Parks track for the Listed City Of Adelaide Handicap over 1400m where we expect the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Zoist to continue his winning ways. The four-year-old gelding was another who gave his rivals a start and a beating at Oakbank on April 16 when absolutely flying late to claim the win on the line. From barrier 11, Barend Vorster will need to take him to the rear of the field once again, but with the likes of Morvada, Groundswell and Struck By all expected to compete for early supremacy, the race looks perfectly set up for Zoist to fly down the centre of the track once again. We’re more than happy to take the $5 on offer from Palmerbet.

Selections:

  • silks5

    ROYAL MILE

Race 9: BM78 Handicap (1300m)

We will be hoping Damien Oliver can send us home a winner on Saturday as he partners the John Macmillan-trained Aiguilette in the last. Despite looking like a winning hope with 100m to go last weekend, the flying Another Award finished too strongly for our guy to go with him. The gear change of Ollie ‘on’ is a massive bonus and despite drawing barrier 16, we expect to see him charging home late and ultimately proving too hard to hold out on the back of a genuine tempo.
