When Saturday, April 30, 2022
First Race 12:19pm AWST

Visit Ladbrokes

Ascot Racecourse is once again the destination for metropolitan racing in Western Australia on Saturday, when the Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic will be the feature event of the day. With rain forecast throughout the day, we look set to be racing on a Soft 6, while the rail will be out 9m for the entire circuit. Despite the rail placement and track conditions, the course is one of the fairest in the country and there should be no bias evident on race day. The first of nine races is set to jump at 12:19pm AWST (2:19pm AEST).

Sheila Gwynne Classic Top Tip – Amasenus

The Listed Sheila Gwynne Classic over 1400m for fillies and mares is the feature event on Saturday and we are expecting the Simon Miller-trained Amasenus to prove too hard to hold out. She meets Buzzoom once again who she managed to get the better of in the Marjorie Charleson Classic over 1200m at Ascot on April 15 and looks set to do something similar on Saturday. From barrier two, we expect Brad Parnham to ride the Time for War mare cold and follow race favourite Buzzoom wherever she goes. Amasenus finished the better when they last met and there is no reason why she cannot do so once again.

Best Bet at Ascot – Top Of The Pops

Following a dominant debut win at Pinjarra on April 13, the Daniel Morton-trained Top Of The Pops clearly looks to be one of the better bets on Ascot’s card. The two-year-old gelding settled in the second half of the field on that day but quickened nicely to put the best part of two-lengths on his rivals and it looked like he had plenty left in the tank. The Spirit of Boom gelding looks perfectly placed as he steps into metro grade for the first time. With Marri Martini set to make this a genuinely run 1200m sprint, the race looks perfectly set up for Top Of The Pops to finish strongly down the outside. The $3 on offer from online betting sites looks a perfect price to load into.

Next Best at Ascot – Apple Schnapps

Despite finishing fifth upon return at the Ascot 1000m, Apple Schnapps was beaten under a length and looks a runner who takes great improvement from a first-up run. With one win from two second-up runs, we expect the four-year-old gelding from the Chris & Michael Gangemi yard to be hard to run down in the opening leg of the quaddie. Having notched up three wins and three minor placings from eight goes on rain affected going, the Alfred Nobel gelding clearly looks to be one of the better bets on the program. With apprentice Brandon Louis on board and claiming 2kg, the plan looks to be simple, jump cleanly, hold the rail, lead the field up and kick clear on the turn. If he gains a relatively uncontested lead, then Apple Schnapps should prove too speedy for this lot. The $6 with online bookmakers looks a good price.

Best Value at Ascot – Ginger Green

Having not finished any worse than third in seven runs this campaign, the Steve Wolfe-trained Ginger Green presents great value in a No Metro Wins affair. Drawn to gain a suck run in transit, the four-year-old gelding will be looking to bring his impressive form from the provincial circuit and bring it to town. If Shaun McGruddy can land the Gingerbread Man gelding on the back of the leader’s heels, Ginger Green has the turn of foot to take out a race like this. The $9 with Bet365 looks the wrong price and one we are happy to take advantage of.
