Thursday will see Day One of the Wagga Cup Carnival run and won, with the $200,000 Wagga Town Plate (1200m) the feature event on the eight-race program. HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst presents you with his best bet for the feature sprint, as well as his top selections and quaddie numbers for the remainder of the program. The track is rated a Soft 5, while the rail is in the true position for Town Plate Day, which should give all 140 acceptors a winning chance. The field for the first race of the afternoon is scheduled to face the starter at 12:30pm AEST.

Wagga Town Plate Best Bet – Handle The Truth

It’s hard to argue that Keith Dryden’s Handle The Truth is a champion of the New South Wales country tracks. The six-year-old has won over $1.6 million in his 32 career starts, thanks to success in the 2019 edition of The Kosciuszko, fourth in 2020 and second in 2021. The son of Star Witness finished second in this race 12 months ago and has since raced just four times, running fourth to Nature Strip, seventh to Eduardo and second in The Kosciuszko to Art Cadeau. That certainly looks the right form for this, as he looks to take his first-up record to five wins from 10 starts. He will get back in the run from barrier 14 under Billy Owen, but we expect that he should be good enough to finish off over the top of his rivals.

Wagga Best Bet – Mascherata

John O’Shea and Tommy Berry combine in the last race of the afternoon with three-year-old filly Mascherata. The daughter of Tivaci has won one from 11 and has been runner-up twice, including a last-start second to Circularity at Canberra, but we are expecting her to bounce back and return to the winner’s stall on Thursday. Only four starts ago, Mascherata was beaten less than four lengths by subsequent Group 1 winner Fangirl in the Listed Reginald Allen Quality at Randwick, so that looks to be the right form for this Class 2 Handicap.

Wagga Value Bet – Prophet’s Daughter

Ron Stubbs and Nick Souquet combine in the third race of the afternoon with four-year-old mare Prophet’s Daughter. The mare by Nostradamus has only raced once, finishing second on debut at this track and distance (1000m), chasing hard to go down by just over two lengths to Prince Nicconi who then went on to win his next start, before running third behind Shelby Sixtysix in a Class 3 Highway Handicap at Randwick. Stubbs hasn’t given this galloper a public trial or jump out in preparation for this first-up assignment, but he rarely has his horses out of shape, so we are happy to back his judgement with this runner on Thursday.
