The third and final day of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival is upon us, featuring the 150th edition of the Grand Annual Steeplechase and also the Listed Warrnambool Cup for the horses on the flat. HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert is confident in steering the punters into a few winners on a track rated a Soft 6, with the rail out 4m from the 1300m-300m and then true the remainder. Racing is set get underway at 11:15am AEST.

Grand Annual Steeplechase Top Tip – Getting Leggie

The 150th edition of the Grand Annual Steeplechase is the event of The ‘Bool, and we’re hoping last year’s Brierly winner, Getting Leggie, can add this one to his trophy cabinet. The now nine-year-old is a genuine track specialist having won three times from five attempts, but with this being his first attempt over the 5500m, the query is whether he sees out the trip. His win in the Brierly 12 months ago saw him stalk the speed, take the lead on the home turn and grind away for a smart win. From barrier one, he is set to gain a similar run in transit under Aaron Mitchell, and as long as he sees out the trip, we’re willing to take the $23 on offer with online bookmakers for Getting Leggie in the Grand Annual.

Warrnambool Cup Top Tip – Nerve Not Verve

The Listed Warrnambool Cup has attracted a strong field of 11 runners set to compete for $300,000 over 2350m, and we expect last-start Chairman’s Quality Handicap winner Nerve Not Verve to upset race favourite Grandslam. The Mike Moroney-trained mare got the better of subsequent Sydney Cup winner Knight’s Order on a Heavy 9, and with deteriorating conditions expected on Thursday, she looks the one to be with in the Cup. From barrier two, look for Regan Bayliss to stalk Grandslam and Jamie Kah wherever they go, and with genuine Group 1 formlines and a strong wet-track record, we expect Nerve Not Verve to be racing away from this lot. The $6.50 with online betting sites looks to be overs.

Best Bet at Warrnambool – Tuvalu

Arguably the best bet of the carnival comes up in the 28th race out of 30 at The ‘Bool, with the Lindsey Smith-trained Tuvalu resuming from a short 10-week spell. The four-year-old gelding has a half-length defeat to I’m Thunderstruck to his name back in July and was last seen chasing home the smart Gentleman Roy at Flemington on February 19. He won first-up at 1400m at the track last time in and has two wins from as many starts at Warrnambool, and from barrier six under Jarrod Fry he will look to run his rivals ragged once again. The $2.30 on offer from PlayUp looks to be a ridiculous price, considering his form lines and his above-average abilities.

Next Best at Warrnambool – King Of Pharaohs

Having been an emergency in the VRC Derby during the spring, the Lindsey Smith-trained King Of Pharaohs has always been a horse touted as a stayer of the future. The three-year-old gelding smashed his rivals on a Heavy 9 at Bendigo on April 20 when managing to lead throughout over 1500m. He steps up to the 2000m, which looks to be ideal considering he is out of the superstar American Pharaoh. With Thursday set to be affected by rain, this guy looks to love the slop having won on both Soft and Heavy ground. From barrier six, look for Jarrod Fry to have the bay gelding settled one pair off the speed. With a genuine staying ability, King Of Pharaohs clearly looks to be one of the better bets of the day.
