It is Robert Sangster Stakes Day at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon where nine races are set to be run and won as the Adelaide May Racing Carnival continues. If the tracks plays anything like it did last weekend for Australasian Oaks Day, then every horse should get their chance, with no real bias becoming evident throughout the day.

We look set to be racing on a Soft 5, with the rail in the true position the entire circuit for the meeting kicking off at 11:47am ACST (12:17pm AEST).

Morphettville race tips for May 7, 2022

Race 1: BM82 Handicap (1600m)

We do not need to wait too long on Saturday for our best bet of the day, as the Archie Alexander-trained Eagles Crag is finally set to resume off a seven-month spell. The five-year-old gelding has been scratched at Morphettville and Sandown, with the stable clearly cherry picking which race he resumes in. As long as they don’t withdraw him yet again, we expect the Archie & Jamie Kah combination to prove fruitful in the opener. He is a runner that comes to hand quite quickly, with a win and minor placing from three runs when fresh. In August last year, he finished 1.5 lengths off subsequent Doncaster Mile winner Mr Brightside when fresh and if he is anywhere near that type of form, Eagles Crag should be putting a gap on this lot.

Race 2: BM64 Handicap (1200m)

Following the scratching of Echo Boomer, the Roslyn Day-trained Jean Valjean gains a start in this BM64 event and following an eye-catching second at Gawler on April 25, looks a good bet at an each-way price. The Magnus gelding settled next to last on that day and despite being the widest runner on the turn, really knuckled down late and absolutely flew home to be beaten under a length. In his four start career, he has shown to be tactically versatile, but from barrier 16 on Saturday, Ryan Hurdle will have this bloke settled at the rear of the field once again. There looks to be lots of pace in this event and if Jean Valjean can replicate a similar finishing burst, then he looks to be a nice play at double figure odds with online betting sites.

Race 3: Without Fear Stakes (1050m)

Aitch Two Oh went down by 1.5 lengths to subsequent Breeders’ Stakes winner See You In Heaven in the Dequetteville Stakes on April 9 and clearly looks the one to beat in the Without Fear Stakes. Prior to that effort, the Headwater filly had won both of her first two career starts by a combined 9.2 lengths and with proven form lines and a high-cruising speed, she is going to take a power of running down. From barrier seven, look for Jake Toeroek to have the filly settled outside In The Navy throughout and at the top of the straight, Aitch Two Oh should be kicking clear and finding her way back into the winners stall. The $2.40 on offer from PlayUp looks a steal.

Race 4: Port Adelaide Cup (2500m)

Call us crazy, but the $21 on offer for perennial bridesmaid So Bene looks a crazy price considering his recent form. The four-year-old mare has finished second at all four of her previous starts, including chasing home Canford in the Lord Reims Stakes three starts back. With Designs, Toyetic and Splendiferous set to make this a genuinely run 2500m event, the race looks set up for a backmarker like So Bene to finish over the top of those leaders. With the highest rated horse being a 77-rater in the Port Adelaide Cup, this is no harder than what she has been competitive in. Barend Vorster will have the Hinchinbrook mare settled at the rear of the field and with a strong finishing burst, we expect So Bene will prove too hard to hold out and bring up a long overdue win.

Race 5: Tobin Bronze Stakes (1200m)

The Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes may only have nine runners in it, but it looks to be a star-studded field of three-year-olds set to go around. Having been beaten under a length by the progressive Extreme Warrior in the Bel Esprit Stakes on April 23, the Mathew Ellerton-trained General Beau looks the one to beat in the Group 2 sprint. From barrier one under a well-rated steer from Daniel Moor, we expect the Brazen Beau colt to take up the running and give his rivals something to chase. Two runs back he was 1.3 lengths off September Run in the William Reid Stakes and if the colt brings that type of form here, then he should be a class above the field.

Race 6: Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m)

The opening leg of the quaddie pits a field of 14 fillies and mares against one another in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes and we are happy to side with last start Caulfield winner Tokorangi. The four-year-old mare resumed from a near seven-month spell with a blistering turn of foot to claim victory over inform duo Vasmee and Beltoro over 1400m. The step up to the mile second-up looks ideal and considering she has a win and a minor placing from two starts when second-up, Tokorangi looks a great play at $9 with online bookmakers. With the likes of Comica and Sirileo Miss set to make this a strong mile, Tokorangi has the finishing burst to finish over the top of her rivals and continue her winning ways.

Race 7: D C McKay Stakes (1100m)

Almost 12 months on since his win in The Goodwood, the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Savatoxl looks well-placed to take out the D C McKay Stakes on Saturday. With a few of his rivals no doubt wanting every bit of 1200m in The Goodwood in a fortnights time, the genuine sprinting nature of Savatoxl could prove hard to run down at a double figure quote. From barrier 10, the Kuroshio gelding looks to be the natural leader on paper and considering he has three wins from five second-up runs, there is no reason why he cannot topple this star-studded field. The $15 with Palmerbet is a ridiculous price and is one we’re are willing to load into.

Race 8: Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m)

The Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes is the feature event of the day on Saturday and 15 fillies and mares are set to battle it out for the $502,250 on offer. William Reid Stakes winner September Run ($5) heads the market, whilst Bella Nipotina ($6.50), Away Game ($8) and Brooklyn Hustle ($9.50) all have genuine cases to claim Group 1 glory.

Race 9: BM64 Handicap (1050m)

We round out the day with a BM64 over 1050m and considering we’re with Jamie Kah in the opening event of the day, we’re hoping she can bring us home a winner aboard Sidearm. The four-year-old gelding was inconvenienced at a crucial point last time out and with better luck on Saturday, looks the one to be with in the “get out”. Kah will have Smart Missile gelding settled at the rear of the field and armed with a strong turn of foot, Sidearm will be the one finishing the best down the centre of the track and ultimately proving too hard to hold out.
