Pakenham has a competitive eight-race card for punters to view on Thursday night with four tricky maiden races to get us underway. Sheer Class will start favourite for the Hayes team in race one after two recent placings, and punters will hope that he starts off with a victory. The quaddie kicks off in race five at 7:15pm with much of the field either first or second up from a spell. The last race of the evening is scheduled for 8:45pm.

BEST BET: MARCOLT (Race 7)

For Patrick Payne and Billy Egan, this horse has matched it with some handy horses in town and can cover these. He has been fresehend since his 11th at Flemington but has had enough trials and jumpouts to suggest he will be fit enough for this 1400m event. He has got back in his races previously but having barrier three should see Egan position him up nicely in the run, midfield maybe. He will be looking to get back to the 2000m during this preparation so we are expecting to see him finishing powerfully over the final 200m. His best win was at Moonee Valley over the 1600m journey after he was well backed late. Watching the market trends in the last 24 hours might pay with this one.

Best Bet

Race 7 – Marcolt #2 Marcolt (3)

4yo Gelding | T: Patrick Payne | J: Billy Egan (61.5kg)

$6 with Bet365

NEXT BEST: CITIZEN (Race 3)

Despite a wide barrier (12) we think this Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained gelding can win this 1200m event. After being gelded, he has been spelled but now returns after two fair 900m jumpouts. Before being gelded, he put in a poor one at Flemington (seventh), but we are going on his two quality placings at Mornington and Bendigo previously. He is a lightly raced boy who has had a few issues but we think after being gelded he may improve starting in this event. Celsius Star and Tuahine are obvious dangers and must be respected.

Next Best

Race 3 – Citizen #3 Citizen (12)

3yo Gelding | T: Anthony & Sam Freedman | J: Mark Zahra (58kg)

$4 with Neds

NEXT BEST AGAIN: LARRY OF ARABIA (Race 4)

He won’t be huge odds, but if punters can get just under each-way money for this one, they are doing well. With Michael Walker on board, we think this gelding will settle midfield and be hitting the line well over the 1200m distance. He won a Cranbourne jumpout before finishing quite well down the long Bendigo home straight for third on May 1, so he is fit enough to strike now. The top weight Alison Road raced well last start when second and is a clear danger, while the Phillip Stokes-trained Leonard Larry returns to this track for another try and an improved effort wouldn’t surprise here.

Next Best Again

Race 4 – Larry Of Arabia #7 Larry Of Arabia (8)

4yo Gelding | T: Cindy Alderson | J: Michael Walker (59.5kg)

$4.20 with Bet365
