Mazu has extended his winning run to six, with a tough victory in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) at Eagle Farm.

The Snowden-trained three-year-old justified Arrowfield’s decision to run Mazu in the 2022 and 2023 editions of The Everest.

Despite looking under pressure upon straightening, Sam Clipperton lifted the race favourite up off the canvas, to deny Paulele in the shadows of the post.

“I was thinking at the 600 (metre mark), we’re in strife,” Clipperton said.

“He waschasing a hot speed and was out of his comfort zone. He really wasn’t sure on the surface.

“It is a different heavy track as well documented but I just tried to pick him up as best I could and get him as far down the straight on the bridle.”

Mazu is now a $7 chance in The Everest, which is where the stable will now prepare him for.

He does hit that flat spot but that ability to absorb the pressure and still be strong at the end – that is why we have got a slot in the Everest and that is why we are going to be there,” co-trainer Paul Snowden said.

“He’s had a very good preparation let me tell you. A lot of work has gone into him.

“It’s really good.”
