What Kensington Races

When Wednesday, May 18, 2022
First Race 12:15pm AEST

Visit Ladbrokes

An eight-race program will be run and won on the Kensington track at Randwick this Wednesday, so HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst presents you with his best bets, value bet and quaddie numbers. The track is rated a Heavy 9, but some drying weather is forecast for Sydney, so an upgrade could be on the cards, while the rail is out 4m for the entire course. Racing gets underway at 12:15pm AEST.

Best Bet at Kensington – Koshu

We are using James McDonald as a bit of a guide on Wednesday, given that the star jockey has ridden a couple of these unraced two-year-olds at the trials but opted to stay with the John O’Shea-trained filly Koshu. The daughter of Satono Aladdin was very impressive in a recent trial win at Randwick, looping the field to win by 1.4 lengths under a pretty decent hold by McDonald. From barrier eight, this debutant will be able to settle down midfield with cover and come with one sweeping run again, giving this field a bit of a shake on debut. Follow her in the spring – she could be very special.

Best Bet

Race 2 – Silk #9 Koshu (8)

2yo Filly | T: John O’Shea | J: James McDonald (56kg)

$2.70 with Ladbrokes

Next Best at Kensington – Duke Of Gordon

We are hoping John O’Shea is in for a good afternoon, as he saddles up Koshu earlier and then Duke Of Gordon in the following race. We were with him the other day at Wyong but the stable opted to scratch the talented three-year-old. The gelding has won his last two starts by big margins at Wyong in good style on wet tracks, so he now gets the right circumstances again albeit in tougher company. By Dissident, his last-start four-length romp suggested that he could go on with the job. O’Shea hasn’t changed anything with his promising galloper, keeping him to the mile at Wyong on another heavy track. Tommy Berry takes over the riding from William Pike, and we expect him to be too good once again.

Next Best

Race 3 – Silk #1 Duke Of Gordon (8)

3yo Gelding | T: John O’Shea | J: Tommy Berry (58kg)

$5.00 with Bet365

Best Value at Kensington – Po Kare Kare

Bryce Heys and James McDonald combine in the second leg of the quaddie with a filly we have a bit of time for by the name of Po Kare Kare. The three-year-old filly by Savabeel raced twice earlier in the year, finishing a very good third behind Trifaccia and Taizai on debut at Warwick Farm, before going on and winning her maiden at her second start in nice fashion at Canterbury, defeating Ruinart and Cap Estel. Her first trial back was a ripper, defeating Hasstobegood and Brookspire, while her second hit out was solid enough to be with her on Wednesday. McDonald will have the filly in a beautiful spot from barrier two and we expect her to be resuming as a winner.

Best Value

Race 6 – Silk #6 Po Kare Kare (2)

3yo Filly | T: Bryce Heys | J: James McDonald (59.5kg)

$3.90 with Betfair
