Three maiden races start proceedings at Ballarat on Wednesday afternoon with horses predicted to be running on a Soft 6 surface.

Race one is a set-weights maiden over the 1200m distance for the two-year-olds, so it will be a case of watching the markets in this one with seven of the 16 runners being first starters.

The meeting starts at 12:25pm AEST, while the last race closes proceedings at 4:30pm.

The quaddie starts in race five, where Outback Nation is likely to run favourite on the back of a nice win last start.

BEST BET: Outback Action (Race 5)

Luke Nolen combines with Peter Moody again after Blake McDougall steered Outback Action to a comfortable win at Mornington last start over the same distance as he will be running over here (1200m). On that occasion, Outback Action was backed into $1.30 and won by six lengths. Previous to that he ran second at Cranbourne at his first start, running home quite nicely. His two starts were on good tracks – which is a slight concern, as he will definitely not get to that on Wednesday – but the horse is three years old, so he would have run on wet ground at some stage. Barrier nine is the only other slight concern, but we are trusting Nolen gets over and perhaps settles outside the leader.

Best Bet

Race 5 – Outback Action #4 Outback Action (9)

NEXT BEST: Parisian Dancer (Race 4)

For Archie Alexander, this horse is first-up after a solid second on VRC Oaks Day at Flemington. She may need the run, yet the bookies have installed her as a clear favourite. In her last two starts she was only beaten by a total of one length, and that was with getting pretty far back in the run. She has the ability to make up quick ground late, so with the right run she could run over the top of them – or, if not tuned up yet, run into the placings. Declan Bates takes the ride and she has drawn OK in barrier five.

Next Best

Race 4 – Parisian Dancer #5 Parisian Dancer (5)

BEST VALUE: Frostin’ (Race 6)

For Peter & Paul Snowden, this horse should be ready to win now being third-up from spell. Nevertheless, Frostin’ has drifted in the markets after opening as joint-favourite alongside Forturi with online bookmakers. This son of Frosted x Patrina also had two jumpouts prior to racing this campaign, so fitness shouldn’t be an issue. He ran second on soft ground at Bendigo over 1000m, but the jury is still out as to whether he prefers that over good ground. In previous campaigns, this horse has only had three or four starts before going out for a short spell, so this race could be a mini grand final.

Best Value

Race 6 – Frostin' #1 Frostin’ (5)

3yo Gelding | T: Peter & Paul Snowden | J: Jarrod Fry (60kg)

$4.50 with Neds
