Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted May 19, 2022 Journalists Share Posted May 19, 2022 What Goodwood Day 2022 Where Morphettville Racecourse – 79 Morphett Rd, Morphettville SA 5043 When Saturday, May 21, 2022 First Race 11:32am ACST Watch Live Visit Ladbrokes The Adelaide May Racing Carnival comes to a close on Saturday afternoon with a nine-race card at Morphettville headlined by The Goodwood. Competitive fields are the theme of the day, with the Group 1 feature, four Group 3 races and a Listed event all set down for judgement. We will be starting on a track rated a Soft 5, with the rail out 5m from the 1200m to the winning post, 3m from the 1800m-1200m and then true for the remainder. Racing is set to commence at 11:32am ACST. Keep reading for our free race-by-race preview and quaddie selections Race 1: BM80 Handicap (2015m) The Travis Doudle-trained Not Usual Glorious was a smart winner in BM82 company on May 7 when managing to lead throughout over 1600m. He is a galloper who always wanted further than 1600m yet made it a genuine tempo throughout, with a stayer’s mentality the difference in the end. He steps up to the 2015m, and given he has already won at the track and trip, we expect he will take some gunning down. All seven of his career wins have come on rain-affected ground, so if we get more rain in the lead-up to Goodwood Day, he becomes even more difficult to beat. From the widest barrier (10), look for Paul Gatt to head to the front, dictate terms, kick on the home turn and bring up consecutive victories for the five-year-old gelding. Selections: 1NOT USUAL GLORIOUS 5DOES IT 4TARAMANSOUR 8MEDIEVAL MISS Race 2: BM72 Handicap (1050m) Our best bet of the day comes up nice and early on Goodwood Day when the Will Clarken-trained Extremely Lucky steps out over the 1050m. Contrary to his name, the three-year-old gelding has had no luck this campaign. Two starts back he was a good thing licked when not finding clear air until the final 50m and still somehow managed to go down by just over a half-length. It was a similar story last time out in the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes, struggling to find space throughout the home straight when finishing fifth. He steps back to BM72, and from barrier seven with the all-conquering Jamie Kah on board, he just looks a class above for this lot. Look for Extremely Lucky to be in the second half of the field upon settling, and with a strong finishing burst he should prove too hard to hold out. The $1.70 with Palmerbet is better than bank interest. The five-year-old gelding had never finished in the places in three first-up runs, so we’re of the opinion he has come back better than ever this time in. He sticks at the 1200m, and considering he has two minor placings from two second-up runs, we simply cannot go past him based on form. He gets John Allen on board, which is a massive bonus, and despite drawing barrier two, we expect Allen to have settled in the second half of the field, where he can unleash a strong turn of foot down the centre of the track. We’re happy to load into the $9 on offer from online betting sites. Selections: 9CASHIN CHEX 13JEAN VALJEAN 4BROTHER’S SHADOW 12THREE TEARS Best Value Race 3 – #9 Cashin’ Chex (2) 5yo Gelding | T: Ashton Downing | J: John Allen (59kg) $9 with Bet365 Race 4: David Coles AM Stakes (1200m) The Group 3 David Coles AM Stakes is the first of the black-type events at Morphettville this weekend, which pits the state’s best two-year-old sprinters See You In Heaven and Aitch Two Oh up against one another. Despite being a big fan of See You In Heaven, we simply cannot take the $1.75 on offer. Instead, we are opting to side with Aitch Two Oh, who is four times the price of her rival. When they last met in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes, our filly had to take a sit off the speed – something she had never done before – and only went down by 1.5 lengths. From barrier 12, Paul Gatt will look to be aggressive early and have the Headwater filly lead the field up, with her main market rival breathing down her back throughout from barrier one. Aitch Two Oh should gain an uncontested lead, and with See You In Heaven needing luck at some point, we’re hoping our girl has pinched a break and can prove too hard to run down. Selections: 5AITCH TWO OH 4SEE YOU IN HEAVEN 2MAXIMILLIUS 11AS TIME GOES BY Race 5: Dominant Centaurea Stakes (2015m) One of better bets of the day comes up in the Listed Dominant Centaurea Stakes as the Andrew Noblet-trained Foxy Frida looks to bounce back from an unlucky defeat in the Queen of the South Stakes. Having been knocked around on the home turn, the Foxwedge mare still managed to balance up and stormed home to finished a neck off the winner, Silent Sovereign. Foxy Frida gets 1.5kg off Silent Sovereign this time round, and with even luck she can turn the tables on her rival and ultimately put away this competitive field. Selections: 4FOXY FRIDA 1SILENT SOVEREIGN 2LA DRAGONTEA 3STARELLE Next Best Race 5 – #4 Foxy Frida (4) 4yo Mare | T: Andrew Noblet | J: Billy Egan (58kg) $3.50 with Unibet Race 6: SA Fillies Classic (2500m) The Patrick Payne-trained Douceur returns to the 2500m for the first time since her career peak, when she ran second to Willowy in the VRC Oaks. She may have found the Australasian Oaks over 2000m a touch too sharp but has been building nicely towards a win, and we think she gets that on Saturday. Despite drawing barrier 18, Michael Dee will look to have the No Nay Never filly settled in the first half a dozen, where the filly should be within striking distance throughout. As she showed in the VRC Oaks, Douceur has plenty of heart, and getting out further in trip should suit her down to the ground. The $3.60 with online bookmakers is an inviting price. 1DOUCEUR 2MAMOUNIA 5THE AMAZONIAN 3LADY CHANT Race 7: R A Lee Stakes (1600m) The Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Dalasan will hardly know himself, stepping out of Group 1 company for the first time in eight starts. The five-year-old entire finished fourth in a red-hot Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 9, and despite being six weeks between runs, on class alone he should be too good for this lot. He beat home Verry Elleegant, I’m Thunderstruck, Duais, Montefilia and Anamoe on that day, and it is safe to say there is no runner in this field that stacks up to one of those runners. No doubt, it was a bottomless track at Randwick that day, but he is sure to enjoy getting back to Morphettville in weaker company. From barrier 10, if Jason Holder can have him settled midfield with cover, then the race may be over pretty quickly. The $3.30 with Ladbrokes looks to be a steal. 7DALASAN 2CHERRY TORTONI 1SO SI BON 3JUNIPAL Race 8: The Goodwood (1200m) The Goodwood is the feature event on Saturday’s Morphettville card, with 19 runners set to duke it out for the $502,250 on offer. Boom three-year-old colt Extreme Warrior is a $6 favourite, whilst Behemoth ($9), The Inferno ($9) and The Astrologist ($11) are all genuine chances to claim the last Group 1 in Adelaide for the season. Make sure to check out our preview of The Goodwood 2022 here Race 9: Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) The Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes for fillies and mares rounds out the day, and we are siding with Tobin Bronze Stakes winner Seradess. Craig Williams sticks on board for this, and we expect the tactic to be similar to her dominant win last start – find the rail, dictate terms and lead throughout, giving herself something to run down. She looks to be the only runner on paper to take up the running, and if that is the case, the race could be over within the first furlong. 1SERADESS 3ANOTHER AWARD 4GIMMIE PAR 5MISS ALBANIA Saturday quaddie tips for Goodwood Day 2022 Morphettville quadrella selections Saturday, May 21, 2022 1-2-5 2-7 1-2-4-8-19 1-3 Investment: $60 for 100% More horse racing tips View the full article
