Atkins (1600m) puzzle. A capacity field of 18 has been assembled for the race, with the fancied Political Debate ($7) the fourth of five emergencies and looking unlikely to gain a start. Resonator ($4.80) has firmed into favouritism, while Swiss Exile sits on the second line of betting at $6.50. The speed is likely to come from Cocobrew Express, Resonator, Exo Lady and Allude, while Swiss Exile, Twin Stars and Capital Tower won’t be too far away in the run. On the off chance that there are four scratchings and POLITICAL DEBATE does gain a start on Saturday, the Chris Waller runner is who we want to be with. The son of So You Think was good on debut behind Resonator at Canterbury, while his last start in the Champagne Classic (1200m) at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago was terrific. The colt got a long way back and made up an immense amount of ground along the inside to dead-heat for third, going down by 2.75 lengths. While his work to the post was brilliant, he was even better through the line, going past Swiss Exile and Exo Lady comfortably. James McDonald goes back on and the inside alley would ensure he gets the run of the race. Let’s just hope he gets a run. We made mention of RESONATOR, who beat home Political Debate on April 20 in his first run as a gelding. He franked the form and won again at Gosford on May 7, beating home Zou Tiger and Northern Beaches in tough fashion. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained son of Brazen Beau should appreciate the rise to 1400m, as he should be fit as a fiddle in the care of the astute trainers. From barrier 12, Tim Clark will go forward in search of the lead, and provided he can control the race or get a cushy run, he will take some beating. If Political Debate doesn’t gain a start, Waller will still have a winning chance in the race. ROBUSTO ran well last start in the Ken Russel 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast over 1200m, finishing fourth to Nettuno in his first race back from a three-month spell. Before that, the colt by Churchill won in very good style at Warwick Farm in February, defeating Williamsburg by nearly four lengths over 1300m. He will relish 1400m on Saturday.
