One of the top three breeders in North American by earnings in 2021, Stonestreet Farm celebrated its 100th graded stakes win by a Stonestreet bred and raised horse last month when their own racing stable's Pauline's Pearl (Tapit) claimed the GI La Troienne S.

Now that breeding season has concluded and the last of this year's foal crop is on the ground, Stonestreet's bloodstock advisor John Moynihan sat down to talk about some of their most exciting new arrivals this spring and discuss how the farm strives to improve and refine their breeding program each year.

“We're constantly looking to rejuvenate our broodmare band,” he said. “We're always looking to inject new blood and keep the quality up. We have mares that have produced a lot of great horses and now we also have their daughters that have produced great horses. We're starting to see the real signs of that now. When you produce fillies that are full-sisters to Gamine or to Malathaat, it gives you a lot of options.”

While Stonestreet does retain several fillies for their racing stable each year and frequently stays in for a piece of some of their most promising colts, the majority of their stock goes through the sales ring.

“We take a lot of pride in what we bring to auction,” Moynihan said. “We probably sell 85 to 90% of what we raise every year. We try to produce elite racehorses. We think we breed them and raise them the right way. We just hope that what we produce, whether we race them ourselves or other people race them, goes on to be extremely successful on the racetrack.”

Moynihan introduced TDN to a few regally-bred youngsters from this year's crop of Stonestreet foals.

2022 f. Into Mischief – Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy)

The second foal out of Stonestreet Stables' famed Ascot victress Lady Aurelia was foaled on April 12.

JM: This is a beautiful filly. She is everything we could have hoped for. At this stage she's really, really good and we're very excited about her. She has the earliness of her mother blended with the balance and the fast look that the good Into Mischiefs have. If I would have drawn a template of what I hoped this mating would produce, it would have been this.

We could possibly race this filly or could possibly sell her. We just don't know at this stage. We have to see how we come up with the ratio of fillies versus colts, but she would be one that I would love to race. She's absolutely perfect.

2022 f. Into Mischief – Peggy Jane (Kafwain)

The full-sister to five-time Grade I-winning champion Gamine arrived on April 6.

JM: Peggy Jane had a lovely Into Mischief filly. She looks very much like her full-sister, Gamine, at this stage. She has the same color and the leg that Gamine had. It looks like she's going to be a bigger-type Into Mischief filly, but she's just a fabulous physical at this stage.

2022 f. Curlin – Dreaming of Julia (A. P. Indy)

The full-sister to 2021 GI Kentucky Oaks victress and Eclipse Champion Malathaat was foaled on April 4.

JM: Dreaming of Julia had another lovely filly. Her last three fillies in a row have been fabulous. This filly has a top physical. She has the same frame and length as her mother. I would venture to say this one will look more like Dreaming of Julia than any of the ones we've had.

Dreaming of Julia was a rare entity in that she was an A. P. Indy that was extremely precocious. She had immense talent and when she was right going into a race, she would win by 20-some lengths with crazy numbers. To see her make the transition into being a great broodmare, with her physical and precociousness as a 2-year-old, it's no surprise. We're just glad she was able to do it.

2022 f. Curlin – Mia Mischief (Into Mischief)

MGSW Mia Mischief , winner of the 2019 GI Humana Distaff S., was purchased by Stonestreet Stables for $2.4 million in 2019. After a successful 5-year-old season, she was bred to Curlin last year. The resulting filly arrived on January 28.

JM: We bought this mare specifically to breed to Curlin. We thought she would be a great match for him. She was ultra fast. She ran at two, three and four and even won a stake for us at age five.

This is a great first foal. She has all the parts of a fast horse with a two-turn, Curlin frame. We're really excited about her.

2022 f. Quality Road – Glinda the Good (Hard Spun)

The Quality Road half-sister to champion 2-year-old and first-crop sire Good Magic arrived on March 5.

JM: This filly has a lot of Quality Road in her. She has the stretch and the scope. It looks like she will be early, like Good Magic, and looks like she'd also be a nice 3-year-old like Good Magic was.

2022 c. Speightstown – Authenticity (Court of Appeal)

The full-brother to dual Grade I winner and first-year sire Charlatan was foaled on March 6.

JM: This colt is probably a little better at this stage than Charlatan was, so we're really excited about him. Charlatan was a fabulous physical. This horse is bay where Charlatan is chestnut, but he is beautifully balanced and has a great neck and shoulder. This is a special horse.

Most of our colts show up at the sale unless we have some sort of vetting issue or an injury, so I'd say he will almost definitely be going through a sale.
