Racing returns to Flemington on Saturday for a nine-part card headlined by the Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes. The track at headquarters has absorbed the rain in the area and somehow come up a Soft 5 for racing, while the rail comes out 12m for the entire circuit to deal with the amount of traffic on the inside half of the track in recent weeks. These are HorseBetting’s best bets and free quaddie picks for the meeting, which is set to commence at 11:50am AEST.

A.R. Creswick Stakes Top Tip – Star Patrol

The Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes over 1200m is the feature event of the day, and the market has it down to the two spruik horses of the early winter racing season – Star Patrol and Passive Aggressive. Having won his three starts this campaign by a combined 14 lengths, the Clinton McDonald-trained Star Patrol is going to take a power of beating if he is anywhere near his best. The three-year-old gelding goes up 5kg from his last-start victory at the Flemington 1100m, but this bloke looks to be a Group-class sprinter. Brett Prebble sticking on board is a massive plus, and we anticipate he will have the Starspangledbanner gelding settled just off the speed. Look for Star Patrol to give his rivals windburn inside the final 200m.

Best Bet at Flemington – Americain Angel

Despite going down by the barest of margins first-up from a four-month spell, we are happy to butter up again with the Danny O’Brien-trained Americain Angel. The four-year-old mare was only beaten a nostril by the progressive Bella Rouge, and considering she probably would have won with an extra 20m, she will appreciate that little bit extra on Saturday when she steps out over 1420m. From barrier 13, Daniel Moor will look to have her settled towards the rear of the field, which will suit her get-back-and-run-on racing pattern. With a second-up record of 3: 1-2-0 and a 5: 2-3-0 record on rain-affected ground, we know she is going to handle the occasion. The $4.50 on offer from online bookmakers for Americain Angel is a ridiculous price and one we are willing to take.

Next Best at Flemington – Pesto

One of our better bets comes up in the opening event of the day, where the Team Hawkes-trained Pesto will look to build on a solid run which has seen him win and finish second at the Flemington 2500m at his last two starts. The six-year-old gelding looked to be travelling like the winner on June 4 but found one better in the smart Maserartie Bay at the track and trip. He needs races to be run at a genuine tempo, as he arguably has a strong turn of foot for a stayer and, unlike some of his rivals in this, brings good form into the race. Don’t Doubt Dory, Heir To The Throne and Prince Ziggy should make this a genuinely run 2540m event, and if Jye McNeil can have Pesto in the one-one or three pairs back in the moving line early, then he may have the race sewn up nice and early. The $3.40 with online betting sites simply cannot be ignored.

Next Best

6yo Gelding | T: Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes | J: Jye McNeil (53kg)

Best Value at Flemington – Zorro’s Dream

We will be looking to bow out in style when the Mitch Freedman-trained Zorro’s Dream steps out in the last over 1100m. The Toronado gelding clearly grows another leg at Flemington, where he holds a 5: 1-3-1 record, and relishes soft going. Despite not being at his best at his last few starts, on March 19 he went down by a nostril to Express Pass, who he meets once again 5kg better at the weights. Having missed the top three once on soft going and holding an impressive record at Flemington, Zorro’s Dream’s best puts him right in this. Look for Will Price to have him in the second half of the field, where he can use a strong finishing burst to put them away.

Race 9 – Silk #8 Zorro’s Dream (3)
