Punt Drunk: Rough results send punters over the edge

Gee, Saturday was a battle. Rough results were the order of the afternoon right across the country, with a number of long-priced winners saluting at the main metropolitan tracks. Today, the team at Punt Drunk has a look back at some of those wins, while we also go over one of the victories of the year from Hong Kong.

STOP THE PAIN

We get it, the favourites can’t win every race – nor do we necessarily want them to – but some seriously rough results on Saturday across Ipswich and Flemington made it hard to get out of bed on Sunday.

Ipswich Cup Day is often a huge hit, with tens of thousands of punters flocking to the Bundamba racecourse. We would have left after race one, as Hattusa proved too good at $40 against a $1.70 favourite. The torture didn’t stop there, as Princess Bojack returned to form in the opening leg of the quaddie, lobbing at $41 with online bookmakers.

Surely that was the end of the suffering? No. While Chris Munce’s feature double in the Ipswich Cup and Gai Waterhouse Classic wasn’t as bad as the earlier results, the double-figure winners weren’t what the punters needed.

Excuse me. How does PRINCESS BOJACK hold off MISS HIPSTER there🤢🤢

If you thought Ipswich was hard, wait until you hear what went on at Flemington. In race three, $71 hope Grinzinger Bishop proved too good in his second race start, flipping the form from his nine-length last on debut at Geelong 13 days earlier. It was a similar story in the second leg of the quaddie as Texas Tea won “like Might And Power” in the Sir Henry Bolte Handicap (2000m). That horse was beaten 17 lengths the start prior in the South Australian Derby but seemingly relished the drop in grade and distance, winning by a country mile. How?

Texas Tea – beaten 5len in a $25k Class 2 At Mornington two starts back. Comes out and wins like Might and Power in a $130k Saturday race today. Play on 👋🏻

Grinzinger Bishop looked an absolute standout on paper. If you didn’t find that, find a new hobby!

WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?

Hong Kong has been the scene of some seriously good wins in the past. Pakistan Star’s debut win will go down in the history books, Chautauqua’s barnstorming finish will be remembered by Australian punters for a long, long time, and Beauty Generation’s winning streak will be spoken about for years. On Sunday afternoon at Sha Tin, Beauty Joy was detached from the field in the Group 3 Premier Cup over 1400m. Jockey Zac Purton considered pulling the even-money favourite up out of the race, but luckily for punters he stuck on to his task, with the horse producing an incredible victory.

WHAT HAVE WE JUST WITNESSED!? 🤯

Incredible! Beauty Joy soars to an almighty win after settling five lengths off the field with 1000m to go… @Beautystablehk | @zpurton | #HKracing pic.twitter.com/75VVJT3EOU
