Caulfield is one of four metropolitan tracks in Melbourne and is owned and operated by the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC). Caulfield racecourse has long been known as “The Heath” and hosts important races such as the Caulfield Cupm in the lead up the Melbourne Cup, and key two-year-old and three-year-old races like the Caulfield Guineas and Blue Diamond Stakes. In operation since 1859, Caulfield Racecourse is one of the oldest operating race tracks in the country and to this day holds approximately 25 race meetings a year.

Caulfield address & how to get there

Caulfield Racecourse is located at 22 Station St, Caulfield East VIC 3145 and is approximately 12km from Melbourne CBD.

If you are heading to the races from the city or from the east, the best way to get there by car is along National Route 1, as the racecourse is off Normanby Rd. While from the north or west of Melbourne it is best to follow the M1 and come via Burke Rd in Caulfield.

A majority of punters will catch public transport to Caulfield Racecourse, with the train station approximately 200m from the main entrance to the track. The Cranbourne/Pakenham line from Flinders Street is the most efficient way to get to Caulfield, with the journey just a 15 minute one on the train.

Alternatively, tram stop #56 on the 3/3a line will drop punters off about 300m from the main entrance to Caulfield.

On race days, a train can be taken directly to the racetrack. Caulfield is also accessible by bus; Routes 623 or 624 will take you there.


Caulfield racetrack specifications & details

The course proper at Caulfield has a circumference of 2080m, whilst the length of the home straight is 367m.

There is a 1200m chute, where races held between the 1000m-1200m jump from the chute, with runners needing to navigate the home corner in the running. Races over 1400m jump from a small chute down the back of the race track.


Major races held at Caulfield

Caulfield plays host to 11 Group 1 races each racing season and is headlined by the Caulfield Cup Carnival each spring. The Carnival is held from the second Saturday of October until the third Saturday of the month, with multiple Group 1 races held throughout the week.

The headline act for the week is the Caulfield Cup (2400m) which is often used as the perfect lead-in race to the Melbourne Cup and is the first of the three marquee events held in Victoria each season.

Four other Group 1 races are held during the Carnival, with the Caulfield Guineas, Caulfield Stakes and Toorak Handicap held on the first Saturday, whilst the Thousand Guineas is held during the week on the Wednesday on ‘Ladies Day’ at The Heath.

Other Group 1 events that are run at Caulfield race track during the Spring in lead-up to the carnival are the Memsie Stakes (1400m) & Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).

Caulfield hosts multiple Group 1 events during the Melbourne Autumn Carnival as well. These include the CF Orr Stakes (1400m), Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and the Futurity Stakes (1400m).

Caulfield Racecourse is also one of three hosts of the $5,000,000 All-Star Mile which is run in Melbourne every Autumn.

Other horse racing tracks in Melbourne include Flemington race track, Moonee Valley race track, Cranbourne race track and Pakenham racecourse.

Caulfield race dates

The majority of Caulfield race meetings fall on a Saturday. There are several exceptions to this though, with meetings held on Australia Day and Boxing Day.

Caulfield Racecourse holds between 23-25 race meetings each and forms a strong part of the 80 race meetings conducted each year by the Melbourne Racing Club.
