Gosford will play host to eight races on Thursday afternoon from 12:15pm AEST, and while it isn’t the strongest of cards, pretty good weather is on the agenda for the afternoon. The track is rated a Soft 5, and the rail is out 2m from the 1600m to the 300m and then true for the remainder of the course. Read on to see our best bets and suggested quaddie numbers for the meeting.

Best Bet at Gosford – Dirty Merchant

Annabel Neasham’s two-year-old Dirty Merchant won his maiden at Newcastle on June 11, leading throughout to win the 1400m event by three-quarters of a length. The colt by Merchant Navy has always shown some potential, right from his very first trial last spring, so we are happy to be with him again on Thursday. Dirty Merchant does have to take on the older horses and he steps out to 1600m for the first time, but everything in his racing pattern and style suggests he will handle that. Koby Jennings won on him last start, so he has again been rewarded the ride, and from barrier two, he won’t have to do any work. This looks suitable.

Best Bet

Race 2 – Silk #2 Dirty Merchant (2)

2yo Colt | T: Annabel Neasham | J: Koby Jennings (57.5kg)

$2.60 with Palmerbet

Next Best at Gosford – Nickelback

Nickelback did everything bar win when first-up at Wyong on June 2, finishing off strongly on the Heavy 9 to run second over 1000m. The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained three-year-old now gets the chance to step out to 1200m on a drier surface, which should be the key to his winning chances. The son of Nicconi retains gun hoop William Pike in the saddle which is a huge advantage, while barrier two can see him settle a touch closer as well. The three-year-old can win his maiden in the opening race of the day.

Next Best

Race 1 – Silk #1 Nickelback (2)

3yo Gelding | T: Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes | J: William Pike (60.5kg)

$2.15 with Neds

Best Value at Gosford – Resilient Star

In the final event on the program, Michael Freedman and Ellen Hennessy combine with four-year-old gelding Resilient Star, who is looking to win his fourth race. The son of More Than Ready was last seen on January 29 at Newcastle when finishing midfield to Sinba over 1200m. The gelding had one trial at Hawkesbury on May 30 and didn’t beat a runner home, but it was a pretty decent field and he’s never really trialled well. Hennessy will take 2kg off the allocated 61.5kg which is handy, while barrier 13 – although not great – does give the apprentice hoop a few options should circumstances permit. This is winnable.

Best Value

Race 8 – Silk #2 Resilient Star (13)

4yo Gelding | T: Michael Freedman | J: Ellen Hennessy (a2)(61.5kg)

$14 with Ladbrokes
