Day 2 of the Rockhampton Cup Carnival will be conducted on Saturday, July 9, with the running of the $150,000 Rockhampton Cup (1600m). The track is on the improve with sunshine beaming down on Callaghan Park, so we don’t expect the Soft 7 rating to last come Saturday, while the rail will be out 2m for the entire course. Racing is set to commence at 12:33pm AEST.

Read on for HorseBetting’s best bets and quaddie picks on Rockhampton Cup Day.

Rockhampton Cup Best Bet – Master Jamie

It seems like we are always tipping this marvel, but when he has been in the winner’s stall on 16 separate occasions, it’s hard to be against him. Master Jamie was brilliant last start in the Tattersall’s Gold Cup (1600m), leading all of the way with 65.5kg on his back to win by three-quarters of a length. That was his first time at 1600m, and yes, you read that right – 65.5kg. The son of Poet’s Voice drops a whopping 6kg to 59.5kg on Saturday and meets a fairly similar field, albeit with the addition of the Chris Waller pair of Kubrick and Bullfinch. Les Tilley knows the horse very well, so he will rate him to perfection out in front and give them something to catch. If ever a horse deserves a hometown Cup win, it is this bloke. A gap job wouldn’t shock.

Best Bet at Rockhampton – Better Rain

We went with the first horse in race one on Friday at Rocky, and we are going to try the same thing with our top pick on Saturday. Tom Smith and Les Tilley combine with classy two-year-old Better Rain, who is yet to miss the quinella in seven starts. The son of Better Than Ready had no right to win last start at this track and distance, but he managed to find clear air late and sprint quickly under 60kg to win by three-quarters of a length. While we concede All That Pizzazz will take some beating from Tony Gollan’s stable, we are happy to side with the locals in what is a good race. From barrier seven, Better Rain will be in the first couple in the run and should take some catching.

Next Best at Rockhampton – Chezblack

While the small field is a slight concern for Chezblack, we are hoping a return to Callaghan Park can bring the best out of her. Now with Lindsay Hatch in Toowoomba, this ex-Rockhampton galloper has a terrific record at this track with six wins and four minor placings from 13 starts. In her two most recent runs at Ipswich, she wasn’t beaten far in metropolitan races, finishing just four lengths off Centrefire in the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1200m) last time out. Justin Stanley has a terrific record on this six-year-old – winning four races aboard her – so his return to the saddle bodes well. If a few of them go at one another early on, Chezblack will get the final shot at them late.

Best Value at Rockhampton – Bayerische

We are giving the benefit of the doubt to the Rockhampton-trained horses on Cup Day and siding with another from the Tom Smith yard. Bayerische was formerly with Stuart Kendrick on the Sunshine Coast, where he ran third to Group 1-winning filly Hinged on two separate occasions. The son of All Too Hard doesn’t win out of turn, but he has been good in two runs this preparation, including a near miss at this track over 1500m last start. Now third-up and out to 1600m, Bayerische could be peaking and ready to win under Les Tilley. He should get plenty of favours from barrier four and might take some stopping in what is a competitive Capricornia Guineas.

Race 6 – Silk #4 Bayerische (4)
