A Classic Upset: Classic Causeway Wires Belmont Derby at 25-1

Classic Causeway (c, 3, Giant's Causeway–Private World, by Thunder Gulch), just one of three foals from the final crop of the legendary Giant's Causeway, lit up the tote board at 25-1 while making his grass debut in Saturday's GI Caesars Belmont Derby Invitational. Favored Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) was second; Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was third.

The GII Tampa Bay Derby winner was sent to the front by Julien Leparoux, set fractions of :23.55 and :48.02 and forgot to stop in the stretch, hanging on to score by a length.

The final time for 1 1/4 miles was 1:59.99.

Classic Causeway, 11th in the GI Kentucky Derby while making his final start for Brian Lynch, was third in his first attempt for Ken McPeek in the GIII Ohio Derby June 25.
