HorseBetting blackbook tips

Some good racing was contested right across the country on Saturday, July 9, so the team at The Follow Files has found you a couple of runners to add into your blackbook ahead of the fast-approaching spring carnival. Racing was contested at Caulfield, Randwick and Doomben on Saturday, with black-type events at all three racetracks.

Doomben | Track: Soft 7 (Soft 6 following R5) | Rail: +0.5m Entire Course

Race 1: No Metro Wins Handicap (1050m) | Time: 1:01.52

  • Horse to follow: YES DREAM (3rd)

North Queensland sprinter YES DREAM will be winning a race in Brisbane in the very near future. After winning his first five starts in the state’s north, trainer Michael Lee sent him south. First-up, the three-year-old by Dream Ahead didn’t beat a runner home at Ipswich, but dropping right back in grade on Saturday at Doomben in a No Metro Wins saw a much improved performance. After sitting three wide without cover on the speed, Yes Dream fought on gamely to run third, just 1.7 lengths off the heavily backed Be Water My Friend. It was a workmanlike performance.

When to bet: He must have come through the run in fine order, as Lee has nominated the horse for a 3YO Handicap over 1200m at Eagle Farm this Saturday. If he draws a low gate, we would expect him to be very hard to beat there. Should he not race this weekend, there is a very winnable No Metro Wins Handicap over 1200m at Doomben the following week.

Race 10: Benchmark 85 Handicap (1350m) | Time: 1:21.25

  • Horse to follow: OCEAN TREATY (2nd)

Four horses hit the line together in the last race of the day at Doomben on Saturday, so if it was a dead-heat, we wouldn’t have been shocked. Winning the race was Wham, but the unlucky runner-up was the O’Dea & Hoysted-trained OCEAN TREATY. She had to weave her way through the field and then switch back to the inside of the track, so arguably should have won, but she now looks ready to win next time. The five-year-old mare rarely does anything first-up, but her second-up record is phenomenal with three wins from four starts.

When to bet: She looks ready to take her second-up record to four wins from five starts.

Randwick | Track: Heavy 9 | Rail: +9m Entire Course

Race 9: Fillies & Mares Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m) | Time: 1:07.58

  • Horse to follow: SUNRISE RUBY (2nd)

SUNRISE RUBY has always shown plenty of ability – so much so, she started at $9 in The Kosciuszko last year. Albury trainer Mitchell Beer opted to avoid the autumn after a plain first-up run at Moonee Valley, forcing her to miss the Country Championships. The Casino Prince mare put in an eye-catching run first-up on Saturday, flying home to finish second behind Lady Brook.

When to bet: We wouldn’t be surprised to see her winning a race very soon and then giving them a shake in the $1.3 million Kosciuszko later in the spring. She looks on track.

Caulfield | Track: Soft 7 | Rail: +3m Entire Course

Race 7: Benchmark 84 Handicap (1700m) | Time: 1:46.50

  • Horse to follow: LONG ARM (9th)

While an eight-length defeat doesn’t really jump off the page, we can make a case to follow LONG ARM throughout the preparation. The Peter Gelagotis-trained six-year-old gelding is just a dour stayer, so the slowly run 1700m contest was never going to suit him first-up on Saturday, but his best work in the race was in the last 10m and through the line. He turns in last in the white and lime green silks, so keep your eye on him in the replay below.

When to bet: It could take a run or two for Long Arm to get warm, but once he gets out to 2400m and beyond in this preparation, we want to be with him. He’s placed in a Lord Reims Stakes and an Adelaide Cup, so he has class, and he looks to have returned in good order.
