After a terrific performance on debut at Geelong on Friday afternoon, two-year-old gelding Cadazio could have his presence felt in the 2022 Melbourne Spring Carnival.

The son of Tarzino looks a live Victoria Derby prospect, following his two and a half-length win on debut over 1400m.

Trained by Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr, the promising youngster backed up a stylish trial victory at Casterton earlier in July to win well at the races.

Cadazio sat up on the speed under Jye McNeil and was able to boot clear in the straight, giving the Melbourne Cup-winning jockey a really good feel.

“It was a great effort,” the jockey said on Racing.com post-race.

“The thing I was most impressed about today was in his parade he was very fresh and very well, went to the gates really keen, and I was a little bit worried he might be doing the same in the run.

“Once we pressed forward, it was a moderate tempo and he responded to coming back and relaxing really well, which is great for him because he’s going to get over more ground.

“I think he’s got a nice-enough future as a stayer.”

McNeil said that the galloper’s “natural gate speed” took a lot of bad luck out of the equation, allowing the horse to run freely and win like his odds-on quote suggested he would.

“He put himself in that position,” he said.

“He’s still a little bit green with his legs, he was changing and swapping and doing things a little bit backwards still – that’ll come with experience.”

Markets have not yet been released for the Victoria Derby.
