Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted July 21, 2022 Journalists Share Posted July 21, 2022 What Doomben Races Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, July 23, 2022 First Race 11:58am AEST Visit Ladbrokes Doomben Racecourse plays host to nine metropolitan races on Saturday, July 23. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing expert has studied the program and presents his best bets and suggested quaddie numbers to see out the afternoon. The track is a Soft 6 as of Thursday morning, but with more rain predicted over the coming 48 hours, we are expecting to see the track downgraded to the Heavy range by Saturday. The rail is out 2.5m for the entire course, and the first race is scheduled to start at 11:58am AEST. Best Bet at Doomben – Tarex The Winx Guineas form stood up last weekend with third-placegetter Rayjen winning at Eagle Farm. The runner-up from that Group 3 event was Tarex, who now contests a Benchmark 75 Handicap over 1615m this Saturday, so we are tipping that the form will be franked once again. The Lawrie Mayfield-Smith-trained three-year-old has missed the place just once from his seven career starts, while he has never been out of the numbers at Doomben or over 1600m. The son of Tarzino will only have to carry 54kg once Queensland’s leading apprentice Kyle Wilson-Taylor claims his 1.5kg. From the inside barrier, Wilson-Taylor will be able to hold a forward position on the classy galloper and give him every chance to return to the winner’s stall. Fourth-up and right back in grade, he looks very hard to beat. Best Bet Race 7 – #11 Tarex (1) 3yo Gelding | T: Lawrie Mayfield-Smith | J: Kyle Wilson-Taylor (a1.5)(55.5kg) $2.05 with Ladbrokes Next Best at Doomben – Merrily We will admit, we’ve been sucked in by the boom surrounding Merrily, but we simply cannot let this two-year-old filly go around on debut without a few dollars on. The daughter of Astern was a trial star in Brisbane in the spring of 2021, but a few minor issues saw her debut delayed. Trained by the airborne O’Dea & Hoysted stable, Merrily has been given all the time in the world to make her highly-anticipated race debut. She does have to do it in a 2YO Handicap rather than a 2YO Maiden and there are some talented horses in this field like Tow The Line, All That Pizzazz and Pomade, but if she can bring her trial form to the track, we expect her to be too classy. In her sole barrier trial at Deagon this time in, Brodie Loy had her under lock and key, in what was almost a bid to keep her under wraps ahead of Saturday’s race day debut. She will be able to settle into a rhythm from barrier eight under Ben Thompson and no doubt unleash her powerful turn of foot come the business end. It’s exciting to see what she can do. Next Best Race 3 – #13 Merrily (8) 2yo Filly | T: Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted | J: Ben Thompson (54kg) $3.90 with Neds Best Value at Doomben – Safework Don’t pay too much attention to the form guide when it reads ‘3rd Up: 4:0-0-0’, because we have busted that theory with Safework. The four-year-old typically fires fourth-up after disappointing runs early in his preparation, but those fourth-up wins are often on the back of just one barrier trial and a handful of 1200m runs, while his third-up runs have been in tough races behind Kisukano and Wisdom Of Water. This time around, Scott Morrisey has given him two barrier trials, two runs over 1200m behind Uncommon James and Goldsborough, and now he gets him to 1350m – his pet distance – third-up and in a Class 6. While Go Wandji and Palladas are good horses, we’d happily argue that neither would have got within two and a half lengths of Uncommon James, so we are more than happy to be with this son of Spirit Of Boom on Saturday at the healthy odds available with online bookmakers. This looks a great way to end the afternoon at Doomben. Best Value Race 9 – #6 Safework (6) 4yo Gelding | T: Scott Morrisey | J: Sean Cormack (57.5kg) $9.50 with Palmerbet Saturday quaddie tips for Doomben Doomben quadrella selections Saturday, July 23, 2022 1-4 2-3-7-8 1-2-3-4-5 3-5-13 Investment: $120 for 100% More horse racing tips View the full article
