HorseBetting blackbook tips

While Randwick got the flick after one race due to the state of the track on Saturday, some good racing was contested at Caulfield and Doomben. It is off-season at Doomben and the track played poorly as a result, so we will leave that alone, but there were a few eye-catchers getting around at The Heath.

Caulfield | Track: Soft 5 (Soft 6 after R3, Soft 7 after R7) | Rail: +6m Entire Course

Race 2: 2YO Plate (1400m) | Time: 1:26.07

  • Horse to follow: Berkeley Square (2nd)

This time of year is always fun because we can try to find some value in early futures markets – especially with the younger horses. Dan O’Sullivan has a smart two-year-old on his hands in BERKELEY SQUARE, so he will no doubt be looking forward to the upcoming Melbourne Spring Carnival. The son of Territories got a long way back from barrier one, so he was a pretty good thing beaten given he had barely any luck in running. Once he got out, he flew to only go down by a length to Boogie Dancer.

When to bet: This horse could jump out of his skin when he gets to a mile and beyond, so that’s where we expect to see him next start. The Caulfield Guineas (1600m) could be a genuine target for this horse, and he is currently $26 with online bookmakers. This is one worth following.

Race 8: Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) | Time: 1:10.88

  • Horse to follow: SCALLOPINI (2nd)

The Queenslander SCALLOPINI went to Melbourne for the first time on Saturday, and it was a brave run. Trained by the powerhouse Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted stable, the seven-year-old was first-up off a six-week break and he couldn’t have gone much better. He was heavily backed into outright favouritism and hit the front a long way from home, and while he looked like he was headed by King Of Sparta, he kicked back hard and fought all the way to the line to only go down by two-tenths of a length. That pair put three and a half lengths on the rest of the field, and Scallopini is arguably better over 1400m.

When to bet: Sometimes horses can come unstuck when they have their first look at Caulfield, so that run would have done him the world of good. The P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) looks the logical next step for this horse, and if he can improve a touch, he will give that race a serious shake.
