Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 3, 2022 Journalists Share Posted August 3, 2022 Who will join The Autumn Sun on the honour roll of the Caulfield Guineas this year? (Picture: Racing Photos)Some 324 horses have been nominated for the $3 million Caulfield Guineas, with just six of those being fillies, while the Thousand Guineas has attracted 241 entries. Both races are expected to be wide-open betting affairs. The lightly raced Foujita San sits at the top of the market for the Caulfield Guineas, while Fireburn heads the betting for the fillies’ race. Just two Group 1 winners have been entered for the Caulfield Guineas – Blue Diamond Stakes winner Daumier and J.J. Atkins-winning filly Sheeza Belter – while three Group 1-winning fillies have been entered for the Thousand Guineas – Sheeza Belter, Fireburn and She’s Extreme. Sheeza Belter was too good for the boys in her Brisbane Group 1 victory in June, and a number of those have been nominated for the Caulfield Guineas. The first eight horses past the post in the Atkins have all been nominated, with runner-up Political Debate the $9 second favourite with Ladbrokes, while fourth-placegetter Sharp ‘N’ Smart is on the third line of betting at $11. Last year’s Caulfield Guineas winner, Anamoe, finished second in the Golden Slipper earlier in the year, so Kacy Fogden will be hoping for similar fortune with her Golden Slipper runner-up, Best of Bordeaux ($15). Blue Diamond winner Daumier ($15) will be trying to give Anthony Freedman another Guineas win, while it would be his first in partnership with his son Sam, as Artorius could only manage third in the race in 2021 after winning the Blue Diamond earlier in the year. Anamoe blew his rivals away in the 2021 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) in the autumn before winning the Caulfield Guineas, so Gary Portelli and Fireburn’s connections will be hoping that is the right race to springboard into the Thousand Guineas. The Golden Slipper winner is the $8 favourite for the Thousand Guineas, ahead of fellow Group 1 winners She’s Extreme and Sheeza Belter at $9 apiece. Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Coolangatta is a $15 chance with online bookmakers, as are Percy Sykes Stakes winner Paris Dior and Blue Diamond runner-up Revolutionary Miss.
