Doomben Racecourse will play host to the first Saturday metropolitan meeting of the new season in Queensland, with a handy nine-race card having been assembled. We have found you three horses we’re keen to back across the course of the afternoon, along with some quaddie numbers. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course, and the meeting gets underway at 11:28am AEST.

Best Bet at Doomben – Proper Rogue

Proper Rogue blew his rivals away a fortnight ago at this track and distance in Class 3 company under James Orman. The Tony Gollan-trained six-year-old gets Angela Jones in the saddle on Saturday, which is a good booking as she takes 3kg off the big weight of 62kg and she does ride well. Drawn awkwardly in barrier 11, Jones will earn her riding fee as we want to see this son of Snitzel in the first three or four. His two runs in Queensland have been really good, and there is no reason to suggest he can’t continue the run of form.

Best Bet

Race 4 – Silk #1 Proper Rogue (11)

Next Best at Doomben – Ocean Treaty

This horse flies second-up, so here’s hoping she is ready to do it again on Saturday. Ocean Treaty was an eye-catching runner-up when resuming on July 9, going down by one-tenth of a length over 1350m at this track. She had a similar setup in the summer when resuming over 1400m before winning over the Doomben mile when second-up, so the tickover trial between runs should have her ready to fire. Ben Thompson won on the mare by Ocean Park in February and he has ridden her in both trials this preparation, so we are pleased to see him get the ride on race day. There should be enough speed in this Class 6 Handicap to give the O’Dea & Hoysted runner a nice tow into the race, allowing her to sprint at the business end.

Best Value at Doomben – Lepreezy

The run of Lepreezy at Eagle Farm back on July 16 was certainly encouraging behind the speedy Osamu. The six-year-old mare was able to get a gun run in behind the leader, but in turn that allowed Osamu to get a really easy time of it and kick away in the straight, but the way she fought late was encouraging. This Annabel Neasham-trained sprinter wasn’t herself in Sydney on the wet tracks, but the drier surfaces up in Queensland should bring out some better form. From barrier 13, Samantha Collett will use her mount’s good gate speed to get over and find the front and, hopefully, be the one they have to catch. This sort of race is right up Lepreezy’s alley.

Best Value

Race 3 – Silk #4 Lepreezy (13)

6yo Mare | T: Annabel Neasham | J: Samantha Collett (59.5kg)
