Racing returns to Morphettville in South Australia, where nine races are set down for decision on Spring Stakes Day. The Group 3 feature event last year provided the quinella in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield a fortnight later with Behemoth once again getting the better of Beau Rossa, meaning there is plenty to play for come Saturday.

With plenty of rain in Adelaide, we are racing on a Soft 7, with the rail returning to the true position on the weekend. A massive day of racing is set to get underway at 11:52am ACST.

Spring Stakes Top Tip: Behemoth

How do you go past Behemoth in the Group 3 Spring Stakes? It is simple, you cannot. Having won this race the last two years (albeit in the stewards room last year), the three-time Group 1 winner will be out to make amends for what was a poor autumn carnival in his home state. The David Jolly-trained superstar has not tasted success since his win in the Memsie last year, but the this not only looks to be a perfect launching pad for the spring, but a perfect confidence builder too. From barrier eight, Paul Gatt will look to have the now seven-year-old in the one-one or at worst midfield with cover. His turn of foot is electric when at his best and despite being an even money quote with most online bookmakers, he is a clear top tip in the Spring Stakes.

Best Bet at Morphettville: Chicago Storm

With two wins and two runner up efforts in his four runs this campaign, the David Aldridge-trained Chicago Storm should prove too good for this lot over 1200m. The four-year-old gelding travelled three wide no cover the duration on the Parks track over 1250m last time out and was desperately unlucky not to win when going down by a head on the line to Knightstown. This race looks to be no harder than that day and with Todd Pannell taking the steer from barrier one, look for Chicago Storm to stalk the speed throughout. When a gap appears in the home straight, he should quicken nicely and have a bit too much polish for his rivals.

Best Bet

Race 5 – Silk #7 Chicago Storm (1)

4yo Gelding | T: David Aldridge | J: Todd Pannell (58kg)

$2.30 with Unibet

Next Best at Morphettville: Kong

The Ryan Balfour-trained Kong bought up a much-deserved victory at Gawler on August 3, having finished second at his previous three starts. He was a good thing beaten two starts back when running into more traffic than you would during peak hour in Sydney and made amends for that last time out when sprinting nicely from the rear of the field. Despite the low draw of barrier three, we expect Jason Holder to have this boy settled in the second half of the field in the moving line. He has shown this campaign he is armed with a strong turn of foot for a 65-rater and this race looks nicely set up for someone to swoop on some potentially vulnerable leaders.

Next Best

Race 4 – Silk #5 Kong (3)

5yo Gelding | T: Ryan Balfour | J: Jason Holder (58.5kg)

$5 with Neds

Best Value at Morphettville: Duke Of Plumpton

It has been over a year since the Patrick Payne-trained Duke Of Plumpton last tasted success, but Saturday looks to be the day for this genuine wet tracker. With all five of his career wins coming on rain-affected going, the Soft 7 conditions he will face on Saturday looks set to suit better than any of his rivals. He draws barrier one under Sophie Logan who claims 2kg and with just 57.5kg on his back, The Duke is sure to take some holding out if he gets some sort of luck in the home straight. His confidence may be down, but on the back of a narrow second at Cranbourne last time out, if Duke Of Plumpton is anywhere near his best, he is the one to beat in the opening leg of the quaddie.

Best Value

Race 6 – Silk #4 Duke Of Plumpton (1)

7yo Gelding | T: Patrick Payne | J: Sophie Logan (a2) (59.5kg)
