Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 11, 2022 Journalists Share Posted August 11, 2022 What PB Lawrence Stakes Day 2022 Where Caulfield Racecourse – 22 Station St, Caulfield East VIC 3145 When Saturday, August 13, 2022 First Race 12:10pm AEST Watch Live Visit Ladbrokes Racing heads to Caulfield on Saturday afternoon with an eight-race program for PB Lawrence Stakes Day. Spring is in the air, as four of the nine races are set to be run at stakes level, headlined by the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes – a perfect lead-up for those heading towards the Memsie Stakes in a fortnight. Perfect racing conditions greet punters this weekend, with the track coming up a Good 4. Despite the rail being out 9m for the entire circuit, the course is expected play fairly throughout the day. Racing is set to commence at 12:10pm AEST. Keep reading for our free race-by-race preview and quaddie selections Race 1: Handicap (1600m) We kick off proceedings with a field of eight over 1600m going in completely different directions this campaign. Former Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare kicks off his spring campaign, whilst Tralee Rose will be looking to find herself back in the race that stops the nation following a breakout 2021. However, those two are going to need much further than the mile. We’ll be siding with the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Thought Of That who resumes from a short three-month spell. Despite the form of Jimmy The Bear and Chief Altony, things look perfectly set up for Thought Of That to roll forward under Linda Meech from barrier two, gain a couple of cheap sectionals and run away with the first of the day. Selections: 5THOUGH OF THAT 6CHIEF ALTONY 7JIMMY THE BEAR 3MIDNIGHT BLUE Race 2: Fillies & Mares BM78 Handicap (1600m) A strong field of 12 fillies and mares assemble for this BM78 and one we are willing to give a push to at a nice price is the Danny O’Brien-trained Pitchanun. The five-year-old mare went down by the barest of margins at Flemington on July 16 and with a clearer run in the home straight, arguably turns the tables on eventual winner It’s True. Having won just twice from 15 starts, she is a tricky horse to catch, but considering she broke her maiden when third-up at the mile and was placed at Pakenham at her third run last campaign over the mile, everything seems to be stacking up nicely for this Savabeel mare. Stablemate Americain Angel clearly has claims, but we are happy to take double the price about Pitchanun in this. Selections: 11PITCHANUN 2AMERICAIN ANGEL 10WRITE THE SCORE 3THALOSSOPHILE Race 3: Mares BM90 Handicap (1100m) One of our better bets of the day She’s All Class finished two lengths off subsequent Flemington winner Chain Of Lightning last start over 1200m here at Caulfield. Despite being seven weeks between runs and having not won in nearly two years, she looks to have a bit of untapped ability about her. With speed influencers drawn either side of her, Jye McNeil should have no issue in lobbing the I Am Invincible just off the leaders heels. Her sole career win came at 1100m and with big things planned for the mare this spring, this race looks to be the confidence builder She’s All Class needs. The $2.80 with online betting sites looks a perfect price to load into. The five-year-old gelding from the Maddie Raymond stable enjoyed a dream run last time out and from barrier six under Damian Lane on Saturday looks set to gain a similar run this time round in the one-one. He drops 1kg from his last start and with two wins and a minor placing to his name at 1200m, there is no reason why he cannot build on his recent record here. Outside of market rivals I Am Bene and Lady Of Honour, this is a field of perennial non-winners and we expect Home Rule will prove too hard to hold out. Selections: 1HOME RULE 2LADY OF HONOUR 3ATTRACTABLE 5I AM BENE Race 5: Vain Stakes (1100m) The Group 3 Vain Stakes is the first of the black-type events and we are opting to side with the rock hard fit Thron Bone at a nice price. The now three-year-old gelding from the Jerome Hunter yard had strung together a hat trick of victories at the end of his two-year-old season and despite lacking a bit of class compared to his rivals, he looks a great bet. He is one of just two runners in the race to have won at Caulfield and when you add that to the race fitness edge he has, the $9 with some online bookmakers looks to be a ridiculous price. From barrier one, Will Price will need a touch of luck at a certain point, but with plenty of speed engaged in this, look for the pair to be charging down the centre of the track and going home the better. Selections: 4THRON BONE 6GIGA KICK 5ALPHA ONE 8SPACEWALK Best Value Race 5 – #4 Thron Bone (1) 3yo Gelding | T: Jerome Hunter | J: Will Price (57kg) $9 with Neds Race 6: Quezette Stakes (1100m) The Group 3 Quezette Stakes kicks off Saturday’s quaddie and is arguably the hardest race on the program. 11 of the 15 runners are having their first start for their campaign, one of those being the Peter Moody-trained Waltz On By. Fresh off an eye-catching jumpout, this three-year-old filly is only going to get better as she steps out in distance, but first-up over 1100m in a field where she gains a suck run in transit from barrier two, we’re willing to side with her. The I Am Invincible filly is still a maiden after three starts, but considering she was beaten under a length by I’mlovin’ya down the Flemington straight and should have finished close in the Blue Diamond Stakes, this girl has plenty of upside. This is by no means a load up job, but if we get double figures about Waltz On By, she looks a great play in the Quezette. Selections: 12WALTZ ON BY 4I’MLOVIN’YA 6SHE’SGOTTHEBOOM 1MISS ROSEIANO Race 7: Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) Our best bet of the day comes up in the Regal Roller Stakes when the Steve O’Dea & Mathew Hoysted-trained Uncommon James has his first start in Melbourne. The Queenslander has won his last four starts, including the Darby McCarthy on July 9 in arrogant fashion. This is no doubt a harder race, but the way he loomed into that 1110m event and kicked clear of his rivals relatively untouched, suggests there is something exciting ahead for this bloke. From barrier seven, look for Damian Lane to have this bloke settled midfield with cover where he can ask for an effort at the right time. Last start Goodwood winner Lombardo needs to lug 61kg first-up and will be bounding along out in front, which should the race up perfectly for Uncommon James to be sprouting wings down the heart of the track. Despite Doncaster Mile winner Mr Brightside and proven gallopers Regal Power and Scallopini going around, Streets Of Avalon a genuine dry tracker and that was evident in the Bletchingly Stakes when beaten 5.5 lengths and should improve dramatically on Saturday. He holds a record of 20: 5-3-2 at the track and trip and from barrier one, looks to be the key speed influencer alongside Buffalo River. With a genuine love for the track and trip, he was third in the All Star Mile behind Zaaki and I’m Thunderstruck and the fact he goes around with 59kg, the same as each of his rivals, Streets Of Avalon looks a superb bet in the feature event. Selections: 3STREETS OF AVALON 4SCALLOPINI 2MR BRIGHTSIDE 1REGAL POWER Race 9: BM84 Handicap (1050m) No real firm opinion in the final race of the day and spoiler alert, it is replicated in our quaddie, in us taking the field for potentially the first time ever. Polanco is in good enough form to take out a race like this, especially on the back of running second to Here To Shock when covering ground throughout and only going down by 2.5 lengths. Lucky Decision, Pascero, Tamerlane, Sig Positano, you name the horse and it wouldn’t shock if they were to win the last on Saturday.
