Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 13, 2022 Journalists Posted August 13, 2022 In a scratched-down field of just four but billed as a race of only two mains rivals, Damon's Mound (Girvin) proved his 12 1/2 length 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy maiden romp was no fluke as he made easy work of the GII Saratoga Special S. Saturday. Fourth behind a three-wide wall of horses through an opening quarter blitzed in :21.94, the 9-5 second choice angled out wide midway around the turn to join the fray as Valenzan Day (Khozan) dropped out of it. As racing room got tight past the quarter pole, Damon's Mound slammed the door shut on new Coolmore recruit & fellow 'TDN Rising Star' Gulfport (Uncle Mo), who was forced to steady into the lane, and engaged Super Chow (Lord Nelson) for command. But as the top pair came into the final eighth, it was all Damon's Mound who opened up to the line, winning by daylight in 1:17.94 as Gulfport got back into it late and closed to be second. DAMON'S MOUND (c, 2, Girvin–San Antonio Stroll, by Stroll). Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, $145,560. O-Cliff & Michele Love. B-Cliff Love (FL). T-Michelle Lovell.
