HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie picks for Wednesday’s seven-race metropolitan meeting on the Kensington track at Randwick. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is out 4m for the entire course, and the first race of the afternoon is scheduled to jump at 1:25pm AEST.

Best Bet at Kensington – Devil’s Throat

We have always liked the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Devil’s Throat, and although he proved costly for a while, he is ready to go on with it this time around. The four-year-old gelding has won two of his nine races, while he’s been the bridesmaid on a further four occasions, missing the placings just three times in his career. One of those failures was in his most recent start back in April when beating just one runner home in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) on a Heavy 9 track. His recent trial at Rosehill was excellent, so we are confident backing him first-up over 1250m. Sam Clipperton rode the son of Snitzel in that trial, and he has been rewarded with the ride on Wednesday. This horse should be too classy in this.

Best Bet

Race 5 – Silk #3 Devil’s Throat (9)

4yo Gelding | T: Peter & Paul Snowden | J: Sam Clipperton (60kg)

$4.20 with Ladbrokes

Next Best at Kensington – Arnold

Arnold won like a pretty smart horse at Kembla Grange when resuming on August 4, racing away to win by three lengths under James McDonald. The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old ran second to Pizarro on debut in December last year before going for a lengthy spell, but his first-up win off no official trial suggests he has come back well and has plenty of upside. The son of Hinchinbrook has drawn wide on Wednesday, but the race doesn’t possess much speed on paper from the lower draws, so we are expecting McDonald to get this gelding across and into a handy position early on. He stays at 1400m, should strip fitter for the first-up run and keeps McDonald in the saddle, so we are expecting him to go close once again.

Next Best

Race 7 – Silk #10 Arnold (12)

4yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: James McDonald (56.5kg)

$1.90 with Palmerbet

Best Value at Kensington – The Englishman

The Snowden camp can have another big day at the races on Wednesday, with a couple of nice chances stepping out. The Englishman is set to debut following some promising trial form, and the fact that he holds a nomination for the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) suggests the stable has a fair opinion of him too. The three-year-old son of Tavistock has had the benefit of four trials – two of which have been this time in – and he’s looked better each time. Although this horse is likely to want further, the 1300m looks a nice enough starting point. Kerrin McEvoy will be biding his time from barrier seven and hoping the race is run to suit, allowing his mount to finish off strongly.

Best Value

Race 2 – Silk #7 The Englishman (7)

3yo Gelding | T: Peter & Paul Snowden | J: Kerrin McEvoy (57kg)

$8 with Bet365
