A yearling colt by Cairo Prince topped the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (CTHS) Ontario Yearling Sale, also known as the Canadian Premier Yearling Sale, and helped spur a steep rise of the average, which was up by 28% over the 2021 edition. Held Wednesday night at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion, the CTHS sale registered gross sales of $3,837,700 (up 22%), a median of $19,500 (up 95%), and an average of $25,585.

The topper, a Cairo Prince colt out of Hopping Not Hoping (Silent Name {Jpn}), hammered for $115,000 to Dr. Robert McMartin, agent. Consigned by Woodlands Farm, he was bred in Ontario by Murray Smith.

“Our sales week got off to a great start with our race day at Woodbine on Sunday featuring the four sales stakes for previous sales grads,” said Peter Berringer, CTHS Ontario's president and sales chair. “Ontario Racing's promotion of the Sales Credit Program in 2022 has undoubtedly increased interest from our owner/buyer base. We've also enjoyed welcoming many returning customers, who we last saw pre-Covid, as well as a diverse new international buyer base. We thank the breeders/owners who have supported the sale, as more than ever it pays to breed, buy, and race in Ontario.”
