Making her stakes and two-turn debuts in Sunday's GIII Torrey Pines S. at Del Mar, Pegram, Watson and Weitman's MAKING MEMORIES (f, 3, Mastery–Tiz Midnight, by Midnight Lute) took control soon after the start and outgamed even-money favorite Desert Dawn (Cupid) by a tight length. Kicked straight into the lead by Ramon Vazquez, the homebred filly–getting blinkers off following an allowance third going six furlongs over this track July 28–went along comfortably and took some token midrace pressure from Desert Dawn, who was pulled away from the fence to stalk from the two path down the backstretch. The duo raced more or less stride for stride passing the quarter pole, but Midnight Memories did slightly the better work through the final furlong, as she was always holding the favorite in the run to the line. Midnight Memories is the first stakes winner for her Claiborne Farm-based sire. O/B-Watson, Weitman & Pegram (KY); T-Bob Baffert.
