Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted September 5, 2022 Journalists Posted September 5, 2022 California's top turf sprinter LIEUTENANT DAN (g, 6, Grazen–Excusabull, by Indian Charlie) returned to the races for the first time since running Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) to 1 1/4 lengths in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and belied the significant layoff line to punch his ticket to this year's Turf Sprint with a facile title defense in the GIII Green Flash H. at Del Mar, a Breeders' Cup Challenge race. Drawn wide, the 4-5 chalk hit the ground running and was part of an early three-way battle for the lead before easing back to sit the box seat through the middle stages. Going supremely well on the swing for home, he was sent through an opening at the rail by Juan Hernandez and quickened up smartly en route to the victory. Lane Way (Into Mischief), steadied near the back of the pack in the opening exchanges, closed off well for second ahead of Coulthard (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) in third. Lifetime Record: 18-9-4-4. O/B-Nick Alexander (CA); T-Steven Miyadi.
