Co-trainer Michael Kent was so impressed with Jacquinot’s late surge on the outside to win the Golden Rose, post-race he said “they don’t normally do that”.

The three-year-old also stunned former top jockey Corey Brown in commentary, who said “no one else has made ground down the centre of the track” prior to the $1 million Group 1 feature over 1400m at Rosehill.

The colt was not even in the frame late on the straight, such was the speed he continued to gather as he neared the post.

But with Damian Lane aboard, they combined to time the run home perfectly.

“It’s fantastic. What a win. They don’t normally do that,” Kent told Sky Racing, him and co-conditioner Mick Price combining for their sixth Group 1 triumph.

“But the speed was on and it kept flowing. The important thing was the horse broke well and got into a winning position.”

Jacquinot took a brilliant first-up win from the HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 27 into Saturday.

“He was awesome first-up, and a real set play by Mick and the team to come up here second-up with a trial and keep the speed in his legs,” Kent said.

“He’s not a robust horse, so I’m just delighted. It’s fantastic.”

Kent and Price are now keen to set their star colt for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on October 8.

“The plan before today was to go two weeks into the Caulfield Guineas. We’ve ticked the Group 1 box, so we’ll just work out if that’s the right thing for the horse,” Kent said.

“He’ll be back on the truck to Cranbourne tomorrow and we’ll make a call.”
