Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted September 29, 2022 Journalists Share Posted September 29, 2022 What Epsom Handicap Day 2022 Where Royal Randwick – Alison Rd, Randwick NSW 2031 When Saturday, October 1, 2022 First Race 11:50am AEST Visit Ladbrokes The Sydney Spring Carnival officially kicks off on Saturday afternoon when Epsom Handicap Day greets punters at Royal Randwick. The day of racing is highlighted by three Group 1 events, the Epsom Handicap (1600m), The Metropolitan (2400m) and the Flight Stakes (1600m). Torrential rain is forecast for Sydney in the lead-up to Saturday, so we expect to be racing on a Heavy 8 or 9 come race one (currently a Soft 7) and with the rail out 3m the entire circuit, it looks to be the battle of the fittest who will reign supreme. The 10-race program is set to get underway at 11:50am AEST. Keep reading for our free race-by-race preview and quaddie selections Race 1: Breeders’ Plate (1000m) We get our first look at the fresh crop of Sydney’s two-year-olds when a field of nine line up in the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate. It is hard to have too firm an opinion on unraced two-year-olds, but the way Empire Of Japan closed off an 850m trial behind Flying Trapeze suggests he might be the one with the last look at the leaders. With the aforementioned Flying Trapeze and Tarabeau expected to be bounding along out in front, the race looks to set up perfectly for Empire Of Japan to build through his gears down the centre of the track and with a bit of luck get us off to a winning start on Saturday. Selections: 1EMPIRE OF JAPAN 9TARABEAU 7PHYSICAL GRAFFITI 5MACH TEN Race 2: Gimcrack Plate (1000m) The two-year-old fillies line up in the Group 3 Gimcrack Plate and Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott look to have a firm grip on the race. Having run the fastest time of the morning on September 19 at the trials, Perfect Proposal is set to give her rivals something to chase over the 1000m scamper and considering her trial was run on a Soft 6, we anticipate she will handle the conditions with ease on Saturday. From barrier nine, look for Tim Clark to cross his rivals early and with a strong tempo throughout, there is no reason Perfect Proposal cannot lead from barrier to box in the Gimcrack. Selections: 7PERFECT PROPOSAL 12SICILIAN 11SATIN AND SILK 8PLATINUM JUBILEE Race 3: BM88 Handicap (1600m) The David Payne-trained Mahagoni smashed his rivals in a Midway BM72 at this track and trip on September 17 after being lipped out by the progressive Waterford and looks the one to beat in this BM88. The three-year-old gelding was forced to travel wide albeit with cover last time out, but once he hit the front inside the final furlong ended up sprinting clear to suggest he was worth following. From barrier 11, Andrew Adkins will have this son of Muhaarar towards the rear of the field, but with Hosier set to be bounding along out in front, the race maps perfectly for Mahagoni to launch down the centre of the track. At $3.60 with some online betting sites, he looks to be one of the better bets of the day. Numerian is set to go around in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington, so it is down to a race in two in the Group 2 event. She won the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes during the autumn second-up from a spell when putting two-lengths on Verry Elleegant and that field literally jumps off the paper in a race like this. She has missed the top three just once in five races when second-up and with a more than serviceable wet track record, Montefilia should be putting a space on a majority of her rivals. Deadset load up job. Selections: 8MONTEFILIA 1CASCADIAN 2NUMERIAN 4YONKERS Best Bet Race 4 – #8 Montefilia (5) 5yo Mare | T: David Payne | J: Jason Collett (57kg) $1.90 with Ladbrokes Race 5: Dulcify Stakes (1600m) The way the Kris Lees-trained Flag Of Honour ran on with great intent in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality on September 10 and a she steps up to the 1600m on Saturday, he looks the one to beat in the Dulcify Stakes. The three-year-old gelding is no doubt being aimed towards a run in the Spring Champion Stakes and from barrier one should gain a suck run in transit throughout. Having won on a Heavy 8 at Rosehill on July 16, we have no doubt this son of American Pharoah will handle the going and with Hugh Bowman back on board looks a nice play in an open field. With the race set to be run at a genuine tempo, it sets up perfectly for a runner like Flag Of Honour to be hitting the front inside the final furlong and running away with the prize. Selections: 2FLAG OF HONOUR 1WILLIAMSBURG 3OWEN COUNTY 6CONQUEROR Race 6: Flight Stakes (1600m) The Group 1 Flight Stakes is the first of three Group 1’s on Saturday and a competitive albeit small field of 10 three-year-old fillies has assembled. The Golden Slipper winner Fireburn heads the market at a $2.60 quote with Ladbrokes, whilst Zougotcha ($3.30) and She’s Extreme ($6.50) look to be the clear dangers to the already two-time Group 1 winner. Click here for our full betting preview of the 2022 Flight Stakes Race 7: Premiere Stakes (1200m) The Premiere Stakes is one of the last chances aspirants heading towards The Everest get a chance to stretch their legs under raceday conditions. There’s no questioning the class of market fancies Lost And Running, Overpass and Mazu, but we are making a case for one at $91, the Danny Williams-trained Shelby Sixtysix. The six-year-old gelding only gets better the deeper he gets into a preparation and considering he comes to the Premiere third-up we’re willing to side with him at a ridiculous price. He basically grows another leg when the rain hits and if we get towards a Heavy 9/10 his price will only shorten. He may lack the class compared to some of his rivals, but his win in The Galaxy in the autumn suggests he will be capable of running a cheeky race like this. He’s beaten Nature Strip home earlier in the year and if Shelby Sixtysix replicates what he produced in the autumn, we simply cannot let him go around without something on. Perrenial bridesmaid Icebath ($3.90) holds favouritism for the Epsom, whilst Top Ranked ($4.20) and Hinged ($4.20) are the ones punters want to be with in online bookmakers markets. Click here for our $100 betting strategy and preview for the Group 1 Epsom Handicap Race 9: The Metropolitan (2400m) The Group 1 Metropolitan has long been the Sydney form factor heading into the Caulfield Cup in a fortnight and a field of 13 will be looking to claim Group 1 glory. Last start Newcastle Cup winner Durston ($3.70) heads the market, whilst Le Don De Vie ($6.50), Stockman ($7) and Grove Ferry ($8) are the only other runners at a single figure quote. Click here for our $100 betting strategy and preview for the Group 1 Metropolitan Race 10: BM94 Handicap (1200m) We’ll be looking to round out Epsom Day with a deadset mudlark when the James Cummings-trained Bacchanalia steps out over 1200m. The four-year-old gelding has a near bombproof record on wet tracks and has won twice and finished second at three starts on heavy ground. It is hard to knock the racing pattern of this son of Exceed And Excel; he jumps cleanly, hunts for the rail and offers a kick under any condition. We expect James McDonald to have this bloke settled outside expected race leader Maotai and with racing already under his belt this campaign, Bacchanalia will prove too hard to gun down in the final race of the day.
