Aided by a peach of a front-running steer from Ben Melham, the Kacy Fogden-trained Best Of Bordeaux has managed to lead throughout to claim the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick.

Having been scratched on raceday morning from the Listed Heritage Stakes on September 24, the three-year-old colt showed no signs of ill-affect when putting a space on his rivals in the three-year-old 1200m sprint.

Despite being a slight drifting favourite with online betting sites, Melham was quick to take the Snitzel colt to the front and put close to lengths on Sweet Ride and his main market rival Willinga Beat.

The win was Kacy Fogden’s second at Group 2 level and despite a disrupted preparation for her star colt, she could not have been prouder.

“We are four weeks between runs and there are a lot of fitter horses in there than him I think so what he’s done is just tremendous,” Fogden said after asked about the interrupted prep Best Of Bordeaux has experienced.

“He looked like he was travelling so beautifully.

“Ben didn’t move on him until he had to, he waited for that rise and then just let him go through his gears”

Jockey Ben Melham had opted to travel to Sydney for a handy book of rides at Randwick, rather than stay in Melbourne for a bustling Caulfield Guineas Day.

“It was good to get on a nice galloper here today and he didn’t let me down. He had to do a little bit of work from the draw and got across and controlled it once we got across,” Melham said after being asked about his mount.

With James McDonald the regular jockey for Best Of Bordeaux, Melham was quick to say he would be happy to stay aboard the colt.

“That would be up to them (connections) I suppose, but I’m certainly happy to win on him here today and if that opportunity presented itself I certainly wouldn’t let it go,” Melham expressed when asked about the prospect about keeping the ride on Best Of Bordeaux moving forward.

Following the win, online bookmakers were quick to wind Best Of Bordeaux in as a $7.50 chance in the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on October 29.
