It had been nearly four decades and a renewal of the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic S. that pre-dated the inception of the Breeders' Cup in 1983 when the great All Along (Fr)–that year's winner of the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Troimphe–beat the boys, but WAR LIKE GODDESS (m, 5, English Channel–Misty North, by North Light {Ire}) repeated the dose Saturday, with a facile success in the 12-furlong feature, one she was using as a steppingstone to an even bigger stage in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland in four weeks' time. Favored at just under even-money, the George Krikorian runner was off without incident and took up a relatively handy position from third as Bye Bye Melvin (Uncle Mo) made play on a decent pace. Wisely guided out into the three path at the midway stage, War Like Goddess raced out of harm's way and was clicked up by Jose Lezcano with 2 1/2 furlongs to race. Warming nicely to the task in upper stretch, she confronted the pacesetter with an eighth of a mile to travel and came away to score as much the best. Bye Bye Melvin held for second ahead of Astronaut (Quality Road) in third. Second favorite Gufo (Declaration of War), third as the favorite in last year's renewal, was a dull last of seven.
