Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted October 8, 2022 Journalists Posted October 8, 2022 Already a three-time stakes winner over the Keeneland turf course, GOLDEN PAL (c, 4, Uncle Mo–Lady Shipman, by Midshipman) made is four-for-four with a successful defense of his title in Saturday's GII Woodford S. In contrast to his last trip to the races in the GIII Troy S. at Saratoga Aug. 5, where he was restrained off the pace after a slow dispatch before just scraping in, the Florida-bred hit the ground running and was allowed to strut his stuff from the front, covering the opening quarter-mile in :21.25 while pursued in earnest by Gear Jockey (Twirling Candy). Skipping along on the bend, Golden Pal came a touch wide into the stretch and took them into the final three-sixteenths of a mile after a half that was posted in a wicked :43.42 and was never in serious danger, scoring by about two lengths at 37 cents on the dollar. The final time of 1:01.39 established a new stakes record and was a full 1.73 faster than his final clocking from last year. “Of all the fast horses I've trained, he's the fastest. I really look forward to his future as a stallion,” said trainer Wesley Ward. Oceanic (Constitution) just touched off Artemus Citylimits (Temple City) for the place spot. Golden Pal will look for a third consecutive win at the Breeders' Cup when he goes out in defense of his Turf Sprint crown going a half-furlong shorter Nov. 5.
