It is the first of the big four race days of the Melbourne Spring with Caulfield Cup Day greeting punters on Saturday afternoon. The time-honoured 2400m event headlines a massive 10-race program which brings to an end the three-day Caulfield Cup Carnival. Following a deluge of rain in Victoria, we will be racing on a Heavy 10 to start the day, whilst the rail comes out 6m the entire circuit for Caulfield’s marquee day. We expect it will be advantageous to be drawn out wide as it showed towards the end of the Thousand Guineas meeting on Wednesday, with jockeys no doubt looking to veer off the fence.

The first on Caulfield Cup Day is set to jump at 12:15pm AEDT.

Race 1: 3YO Fillies Plate (1400m)

A field of nine three-year-old fillies will open Caulfield Cup Day this Saturday and based on her last start third in the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes, it is hard to go past the Danny O’Brien-trained Hell Hath No Fury. She finished third in a blanket finish on that day behind Waltz On By and Jenny Jerome, both who lined up in the Thousand Guineas on Wednesday. This Hellbent filly has been racing in stronger races than what she faces on Saturday and with Blake Shinn sticking on board, she looks the one to be with in the opener. From barrier eight, look for Shinn to have her settled in the one-one or just outside the leader. If she does, than Hell Hath No Fury will prove too hard to beat in the opener.

Race 2: Grand Handicap (1700m)

We do not need to wait too long on Saturday for one of our better bets of the day when the Nick Ryan-trained Cap De Joie steps out in the second event of the day. The three-year-old filly was an emergency in Wednesday’s Ladies Day Vase, before being scratched and being saved for this 1700m event. Despite being rolled as an odds-on favourite at Sandown on September 25, her run in defeat over 1400m was huge for a runner no doubt wanting to get out over further. The extra 300m looks ideal and with Damien Oliver on board from barrier 14, she looks the goods in this. Cap De Joie has a strong turn of foot and arguably has the most upside compared to her rivals.

Race 3: Caulfield Classic (2000m)

No prizes for tipping Mr Maestro in the Caulfield Classic, but the way he has won his last two starts suggests he is every bit a Group 1 stayer on his way to the Victoria Derby. He won the Derby Trial two starts back at Flemington comfortably and went to the Listed Super Impose Stakes and was eased down to be a two-length winner, but it could have been a whole lot further. The 2000m looks ideal and despite Damian Lane heading to ride Jacquinot in The Everest, he loses nothing with Harry Coffey hopping on board. The $1.70 on offer with some online betting sites is much better than bank interest.

Race 4: Ethereal Stakes (2000m)

Despite still being a maiden after seven starts, the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Moko looks to be a great play in the Ethereal Stakes. The three-year-old filly was scratched from Wednesday’s Thousand Guineas and despite being a perennial non-winner, she looks the one to beat in the Ethereal. She has placed twice on Heavy ground in Group 3 company and at Listed level, so we know the ground will be no issue. She will be giving her rivals a start over 2000m, but with a strong turn of foot and seemingly a want for further, Moko looks a great play at $5.50 with Bet365.

Race 5: Gothic Stakes (1400m)

Having been narrowly beaten at Moonee Valley second-up the Greg Eurell-trained Lincoln Square looks a great play at a double figure quote. The three-year-old gelding had been well beaten in the McNeil Stakes behind the likes of Jacquinot, Aft Cabin and Tijuana first-up, but the way he responded at The Valley suggested he will peak third-up. From barrier four, he draws to gain the perfect run in transit under Jye McNeil and with Zamborghini drawn underneath of him, he should gain a perfect tow into the race. If Lincoln Square is anywhere near his best, he has plenty of upside and looks to present great value.

Race 6: Alinghi Stakes (1100m)

The Group 3 Alinghi Stakes looks to be one of the toughest races on the card, with markets opening at $5.50 the field. Having finished midfield in the Group 1 Moir Stakes, we expect Mileva will appreciate stepping back to Group 3 company and considering she was far from disgraced, she looks a big player. She will most likely settle in the first four in running where Daniel Moor will have her within striking distance throughout. She has three wins on soft going and if we race on a heavy, she was placed behind Bella Nipotina in the Listed Carlyon Stakes two starts back. She is an $8.50 chance with Ladbrokes and if she is anywhere near her best, Mileva looks the class in the race.

Race 7: Caulfield Sprint (1000m)

It’ll be the charge of the Light Brigade when a field of 12 go around in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint. Having won on a Soft 6 at Warwick Farm on October 3, we are willing to side with the progressive Kallos from the in-form Godolphin yard. In the small field of four, the four-year-old enjoyed the fast tempo throughout and despite giving his rivals a bit of a start entering the home straight, he relished the wet ground and finished over the top of his rivals in impressive fashion. He draws barrier eight and will need a touch of luck early, but with Jamie Kah on board, he has to be respected at the double figure quote and we expect Kallos will prove too hard to hold out once again.

Selections:
  • silks7

    KALLOS

Race 8: Tristarc Stakes (1400m)

The Group 2 Tristarc Stakes for mares looks to be just as tricky as the Caulfield Sprint, but considering we’ll be on a rain-affected track we are confident Pride Of Jenni can lead throughout. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained mare blew the start at Flemington in the Rose of Kingston Stakes on October 1, but with cleaner barrier manners on Saturday, she looks the one to catch. Throughout the Caulfield Cup Carnival, it has been advantageous to be up in front and from barrier 15, that is exactly where Jamie Kah will have her positioned. She has a career record of 7: 3-1-1 on rain-affected ground and if Kah can gain a cheap sectional or two, we’re confident this handy field of mares will not be able to catch Pride Of Jenni in the Tristarc Stakes.

Selections:
  • silks13

    PRIDE OF JENNI

  • silks9

    CHAIN OF LIGHTNING

  • silks1

    KISSONALLFORCHEEKS

Race 9: Caulfield Cup (2400m)

The time-honoured Caulfield Cup is the first of the “Big Three” races in the Melbourne Spring Carnival and a capacity field of 18 stayers will compete for the $5 million on offer. Smokin’ Romans ($4.40) has opened favourite with online bookmakers, whilst Gold Trip ($9) and Benaud ($9.5) are the only other runners at a single figure quote in what looks to be a wide open edition of the Caulfield Cup.

Race 10: Moonga Stakes (1400m)

The Group 3 Moonga Stakes brings the proceedings to a close on Caulfield Cup Day and we expect Bandersnatch to build on an impressive third when first-up at Sandown on September 25. The six-year-old gelding flashed home late in the Testa Rossa Stakes when going down by 1.2 lengths to I Wish I Win and just missed grabbing Ayrton for second who he meets again on Saturday. He is as versatile a galloper as you could hope for having reign supreme on firmer decks and been ultra-impressive on heavy decks. From barrier 14 he will be at the rear of the field throughout, but armed with a strong turn of foot and love for getting his toe in the ground, we are happy to side with Bandersnatch at almost the double price of Ayrton.
