What Cox Plate Day 2022
Where Moonee Valley Racing Club – Feehan Ave, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039
When Saturday, October 22, 2022
First Race 12:15pm AEDT

Visit Ladbrokes

Cox Plate Day 2022 is finally upon us and a massive 10-race program has been assembled at Moonee Valley for punters to delve into on Saturday afternoon. Up to 15mm of rain is forecast to hit The Valley on Friday for Manikato Stakes Night, before another 15mm is expected to hit the track on Saturday for one of the marquee meetings of the year in Victoria.

The track may be a Good 4 currently, but we expect to start on a Soft 7 or worse come race one on Saturday, with the rail – set in the true position – to chop out significantly throughout the day. A massive day of racing gets underway at 12:15pm AEDT.

Race 1: Inglis Banner (1000m)

Cox Plate gets underway with the traditional Inglis Banner where a field of seven two-year-olds are set to compete for the $500,000 on offer. The entire field is having their first start at the races and as always, betting in these races are often fraught with danger. We have opted to side with the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Arkansaw Kid who comes to the Inglis Banner following two impressive wins at the Flemington jump outs. Damien Oliver sticks on board having paired with this Harry Angel colt at his last jump out and if Ollie can find the rail, then Arkansaw Kid might just prove too hard to catch in the opener.

Race 2: Handicap (1000m)

Having taken out a heat of the 955m Challenge on Moir Stakes night in impressive fashion, we’re hoping the Julien Welsh-trained Wolflands can salutes at a nice price. The four-year-old gelding was forced to travel three wide up on speed throughout and despite the red hot tempo, managed to keep finding under pressure to hold off Sartorial Splendor in a driving finish. He loves wet tracks having won on four occasions and placed once in six runs and considering he only needs to carry 54kg against seasoned rivals, we are more than happy to take the $18 on offer with some online bookmakers. If Carleen Hefel can have this bloke settled just off the speed with a bit of cover, we anticipate Wolflands will blouse his rivals once again.

Race 3: Red Anchor Stakes (1200m)

The Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes is the first of the black-type events on Saturday afternoon and despite being an emergency in Friday night’s Manikato Stakes, Sweet Ride looks awfully hard to beat in this. The Annabel Neasham-trained three-year-old loomed up as if he was going to run straight past the Group 1 quality sprinter Best Of Bordeaux in the Roman Consul Stakes on October 8, but his rival managed to kick under pressure and ultimately proved a touch too classy. This looks to be no harder than that day and if Chad Schofield can have him in a prominent position from barrier 10, then Sweet Ride has the form behind him and the sprinting capability to take out a race like the Red Anchor Stakes. He looks one of the better bets on the program.

Race 4: William Crockett Stakes (1200m)

Ciaron Maher & David Eustace will be hoping their up and coming three-year-old filly Greece can build off her impressive debut victory at Geelong on September 29. She ran slick time on that day when barely asked for an effort from Jamie Kah and considering she showed she can handle rain-affected going she looks to me a smart play in this Listed sprint over 1200m. From barrier six, Kah should have no issue in landing this I Am Invincible filly up on speed and if she can land in the one-one or outside the leader, the race might well be over within the first furlong. She is a filly on the way up and their looks to be plenty of black-type wins in store for her starting with the William Crocket on Saturday.

Race 5: Fillies Classic (1600m)

We were with the Danny O’Brien-trained Hell Hath No Fury at Caulfield last week before she was ultimately scratched and if she goes around in the Group 2 Fillies Classic, she looks the one to beat. The three-year-old filly gains the services of James McDonald having been narrowly beaten in the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes at Sandown on September 25 and a repeat effort of that performance will have her right in the finish here. She has chased home the likes of Waltz On By, Jenny Jerome and Bank Maur this campaign and has been competitive throughout. From barrier four she draws to gain a perfect run in transit and when JMac asks for an effort, we expect the Hellbent filly to unleash her fury upon The Valley.

Race 6: Crystal Mile (1600m)

We are happy to be proven wrong, but the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Gentleman Roy looks perfectly placed to take out the Group 2 Crystal Mile. He will need to turn the tables on Toorak Handicap winner Tuvalu and placegetter Military Expert, but his racing pattern is set to suit The Valley perfectly. From barrier six, we expect Jye McNeil to have this bloke following Buffalo River wherever he goes and when asked for an effort, he should be able to sprint past his fellow pacemaker and have enough of a break to hold off the likes of Tuvalu, Callsign Mav and Military Expert. It is an open edition of the Mile, but at $6 with online betting sites it is a price we cannot ignore.

Race 7: Moonee Valley Vase (2040m)

Our best bet of the day comes up in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase as the Dan O’Sullivan-trained Berkeley Square looks to put the finishing touches on his preparation for the VRC Derby. The three-year-old gelding was a hard watch for those who backed him in the Caulfield Guineas when he was all dressed up with nowhere to go, whilst his rivals were making their moves. He has been nothing short of sensational this campaign and is armed with a devastating turn of foot for a stayer on the way up. He is proven on wet ground and despite this being his first time at The Valley, he simply looks to have a class edge on his rivals. Craig Williams continues his strong affiliation with the horse and if he can lob him midfield with cover, Berkeley Square should be within striking distance at the 600m mark where he can build through his gear, unleash a strong turn of foot and ultimately prove far too superior for this lot on his way to a clash with Mr Maestro in the Group 1 VRC Derby.

Race 8: Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m)

The Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup worth $1 million has attracted a strong field of 12 stayers look to progress towards a run in the Melbourne Cup. The bookies have Francesco Guardi ($4.40) at the top of the market, whilst Persan ($4.60), Desert Icon ($6) and Lunar Flare ($6) are all expected to be fighting out the finish in what looks to be a terrific edition of the Moonee Valley Gold Cup.

Race 9: Cox Plate (2040m)

Australia’s weight-for-age championship, the Group 1 Cox Plate takes centre stage at The Valley on Saturday and a strong field of 12 have accepted to compete for the $5 million on offer. Anamoe ($2.40) has been installed as a $2.40 favourite with Ladbrokes with the Godolphin runner looking to go one better than his narrow defeat last year. Zaaki ($4.20) and import El Bodegon ($7.50) look to be the key market rivals in what looks to be an open event outside of the favourite.

Buckle up, this is set to be a cracking race!

Race 10: Tesio Stakes (1600m)

We round out the Cox Plate Carnival with the Group 3 Tesio Stakes where a strong field of 12 mares have assembled and we are hoping last start Listed Murray Bridge Cup winner Agreeable can on with the job here. The five-year-old mare relished the genuine tempo throughout on that day and stormed home to get the bob in on the line. By this time in the day, we expect backmarkers to be fighting out the finish and if she can gain a genuine tempo throughout, Agreeable has the turn of foot to finish over the top of her rivals in the last. Jamie Kah on board is a big plus and looks the best way home in the Tesio.
