Racing heads to the hunter for the Cessnock Cup at Newcastle Monday afternoon for an intriguing nine-race program. We’ve got a heavy 8 listed for the day, however with strong downpour expected over the weekend and on race-day, expect this track to be in the heavy area. Rail is in the true position the entire circuit which shouldn’t favour any horses for the day with conditions the main factor.

The first race is scheduled to get underway at 1:15pm AEST.

Cessnock Cup Best Bet: Our Candidate

We think the Port Macquarie Cup form is the correct reference for the Cessnock Cup on Monday afternoon. Our Candidate wasn’t disgraced behind short priced favourite Quality Time on October 7, he was back on the rail before making his run late in the piece, but it was hard to make ground in that race with the first three runners finishing in that order. He’s clearly the class in this field, hence the 62kg, and looks due to peak after a long, but impressive preparation. Aaron Bullock should utilise the inside draw and take up the running, with our Candidate fit and with the class advantage, hopefully he’ll take some chasing down over the 2100m.

Cessnock Cup Top Tip

Race 6 – silks#1 Our Candidate (3)

8yo Gelding | T: Kris Lees | J: Aaron Bullock (62kg)

$3.50 with Bet365

Newcastles Best Bet Of The Day: Bikou (Race 5)

We’re heading to maiden company for our best bet at Newcastle with second-up gelding Binkou. His first-up performance behind Tiva Bay at Port Macquarie on October 7 looks to rate well in this field. Plenty of his rivals have had more than enough chances to break their maiden status, but don’t look as progressive as this horse by Outreach. Robert Agnew trains this three-year-old and with Jean Van Overmeire getting on board we think he’s a terrific bet at the price, and he earns the best bet tag with us.

Best Bet

Race 5 – silks#3 Bikou (9)

3yo Gelding | T: Robert Agnew | J: Jean Van Overmeire (57kg)

$7.50 with Palmerbet

Next Best Bet: Tiva Bay (Race 9)

We referenced Tiva Bay in our best bet preview, and that’s because we’re just as keen to be backing him in the lucky last. Tiva Bay broke his maiden is stylish fashion coming from well back in the field at Port Macquarie on October 7 to score by 0.1 lengths. While the margin doesn’t look impressive, the win itself was enormous to make up the ground he did. Now moving into BM58 level after that win, plus a step up in trip to the 1350m, we think this Kris Lees-trained gelding by Tivaci can go back-to-back on Monday afternoon to end the card. Bullock should hopefully be looking to ride his double after saluting on Our Candidate. Tiva Bay should get the gun sit in transit and rocket home as he did first-up.

Next Best Bet

Race 9 – silks#4 Tiva Bay (1)

4yo Gelding | T: Kris Lees | J: Aaron Bullock (61kg)

$4.20 with Betfair
