There is class everywhere you look in the field of 11 accepted for the Group 1 Champions Mile at Flemington on Saturday afternoon. Nine of the 11 runners have earned connections over $1 million in prizemoney, and with $3 million on offer on Saturday, it looks set to be a must-watch event.

Having taken out the Nature Strip Stakes on October 29, Private Eye ($3.50) has opened favourite with online betting sites, while last-start Crystal Mile winner My Oberon ($5) looks to be his biggest danger. Cascadian ($6), Alligator Blood ($6.50) and Mr Brightside ($10) are all given a chance in what looks to be an open Group 1 race.

The speed influence in the race looks to be obvious, with Alligator Blood expected to make this a genuinely run mile. Look for Tuvalu, Kolding and Mr Brightside to all be within the first half a dozen upon settling. Cascadian and My Oberon will most likely settle at the rear of the field and be the ones having the last crack at the leaders.

Cascadian has been nothing short of impressive so far this campaign and looks to be a great play at a nice price in the Champions Mile. The James Cummings-trained veteran was a class above in his last two starts in Sydney in weaker company than this, but visually has been dominant. He is sure to appreciate the tempo that Alligator Blood will set and under a well-timed sprint under James McDonald, the old marvel certainly has the form and the turn of foot to finish over the top of his rivals and bring up a third Group 1 win.

Private Eye has been one of the surprise packets of the spring and his win in the Nature Strip Stakes last week has him as a deserving favourite in this. He won at 1200m in the Gilgai Stakes, finished a half-length off Giga Kick in The Everest and smashed his rivals last time out to suggest he is in career best form. He gets back out to his pet distance of the mile and is set to appreciate the improving surface he gains on Saturday. He will be at the rear of the field close to some of his main rivals and with a sharp turn of foot, there is no reason why he cannot bring up a third win from four starts this campaign.

Mr Brightside is another who will appreciate getting to the mile again having won seven times from 10 attempts and wasn’t beaten far in this race last year. Whilst the win of My Oberon in the Crystal Mile has him as a deserving second elect in markets and just needs to replicate that effort to go close in this.

On form, there is about six or seven genuine chances in the Champions Mile, but we are happy to side with Cascadian in the Group 1.
