What Railway Stakes Day
Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104
When Saturday, November 19, 2022
First Race 12:05pm AWST

Visit Ladbrokes

Saturday metropolitan racing will once again be at Ascot Racecourse as the Western Australian Turf Club hosts the annual Railway Stakes Day meeting. The highlight event on Saturday will be the Group 1 Railway Stakes, with the co-feature being the Group 2 WA Guineas for the three-year-olds.

The track is currently rated a Good 4, but with some rain on the forecast for Thursday and Friday, we could be in the Soft range come raceday. The rail will be back in the true position this week, so hopefully the track should play fair to all runners and we don’t get another leader-biased surface like last week. Racing will get underway at 12:05pm AWST.

Race 1: Crystal Slipper Stakes (1100m)

In the first race of the day, we have the two-year-old’s doing battle over the 1100m, with 10 of the 12 runners on debut. One of those runners that will be on debut will be the Neville Parnham-trained Home James. This two-year-old gelding has only had the one public trial at Belmont over 1000m on November 7, where he ran home stylishly down the outside from the back of the 10-horse field. Brad Parnham will stick with this son of Maurice on Saturday, after he rode him in that one public trial. This youngster showed good barrier manners and looked to be well educated for his trial debut so we are hoping that his education will hold him in good stead for his race day debut.

Race 2: RTG 66+ Handicap (2200m)

Our best bet of the day will come up in race two, where the Adam Durrant-trained Truly Inspired will be attempting the 2200m for the first time after coming off a dominant win at Ascot on November 9 over 1800m. This lightly raced six-year-old gelding has only had seven starts for his career, recording two wins and one placing. This son of Dundeel was a very short $1.45 favourite at his last start and he won the way a long odds-on favourite should win, eased down by 3.4 lengths. After winning so easily in an easier race over 1800m with 60kg, there should be very little worries about him running out the 2200m with 55.5kg on his back. William Pike will stick with this guy after riding him to victory last start and from barrier three, Pike should have this guy in the one-one and give him every opportunity to repeat the dose on Saturday.

Race 3: RTG 72+ Handicap (1000m)

In the RTG72+ Handicap for the speedsters over 1000m we will be siding with Misty Bazeley-trained Cash Away, who will be first-up on Saturday returning from a two-month spell. This four-year-old gelding has a very good first-up record, with two wins and a second from three first-up starts throughout his eight-start career. Combine those first-up stats with his impressive record at the 1000m (6:4-1-1) and you will struggle to find a runner in this field that has a more impressive record. There looks to be a lot of speed in this race, meaning Clint Johnston-Porter should be able to settle just better than midfield and look to peel to the outside and run home strong.

Race 4: RTG 66+ Handicap (1400m)

In the fourth race of the day over 1400m, our next best bet will be the Simon Miller-trained Zephyra who was too bad to be true at her most recent start, returning from a five-month spell. After jumping from barrier 10, Patrick Carbery didn’t have many options as this girl jumped well and he was stuck out wide, so he chose to sit in the three-wide running line for the majority of the 1200m. This four-year-old mare will derive a lot of benefit from that tough first-up run and she should be ready to win second-up over the more suitable trip of 1400m on Saturday. This daughter of Demerit has drawn barrier one and if Carbery can get this girl to jump like she did last start, she should be able to get the box seat behind the leaders, ready to pounce and record win four at start five.

Race 5: Listed Jungle Mist Classic (1200m)

The Listed Jungle Mist Classic over 1200m has attracted a very nice field, with some very talented runners choosing to run here and possibly go onto the Winterbottom Stakes next week. Colin Webster had his star three-year-old filly, Baby Paris, scratched from the Placid Ark Stakes at the barriers last week, so he has chosen to take on the older horses here as a consolation. This filly has had a bright start to her career, recording four wins at her first five starts, including three win streak that she is currently on. This daughter of Playing God will be the only three-year-old in the field and therefore she will carry 51.5kg. She will jump from barrier six, which should be perfect for her to get into the one-one position or outside the leader and give them something to chase on the home turn with the benefit of the light weight.

Race 6: Listed Carbine Club Of W.A Stakes (1400m)

Our value bet of the day will come up in the Listed Carbine Club of W.A Stakes over 1400m, where we will be siding with the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Winning Partner, who will be making the trip from Victoria to Perth this week. This seven-year-old gelding got too far back last start over 1600m at Flemington last start, but the start before he was able to run over the top of the field recording a classy win over a good field at Moonee Valley over 1500m. This son of Dawn Approach has drawn barrier 12 of 14, so Barend Vorster has options. If the leaders take off and set up a hot tempo, he can drop to the back of the field, but if they leaders crawl, he will have the fitness on his side to sit in the three-wide running line with cover.

Race 7: WA Guineas (1600m)

The WA Guineas will be the most anticipated race on the program for Saturday as we will get to see two of the best three-year-old’s Perth has to offer competing against one-another for the first time. The star filly from the Simon Miller yard, Amelia’s Jewel will take on the star gelding from the Neville Parnham yard, Bustler. On Saturday, we will be siding with the filly, Amelia’s Jewel, even though she lost for the first time in her career at her last start in the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes. This filly has plenty of ability, recording four wins from her first five starts. From barrier five, Patrick Carbery won’t have to go right to the back of the field, like he did last start, which should mean at the 200m mark she won’t have to make up more than two or three lengths on the leaders. If Carbery gets her into clear air at the 300m mark, this girl will be very hard to beat.

Race 8: Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m)

The Railway Stakes is one of the feature Group 1 races for the Perth Summer Carnival with a full field of 16 horses set to do battle over the 1600m for the huge $1.5 million prize pool. There will be four eastern raiders making the trip to Perth this week to tackle the Group 1 and take on the best that the west has to offer. Alaskan God ($4.20) has opened up as the online bookmakers favourite, closely followed by Trix Of The Trade ($5) and Karli’s Karma ($8).

Race 9: RTG 72+ Handicap (1600m)

In the final event on Railway Stakes Day, we will be looking for the lethal combination of Adam Durrant and Clint Johnston-Porter to finish our day on a winning note when they combine with Tri For Us. This five-year-old mare has been running very well without recording a win this preparation, finishing no worse than fifth in her five starts. This daughter of Vital Equine has drawn barrier 12 of 13 on Saturday, but considering she likes to get back in her races, we don’t expect the barrier to be much of a concern for Johnston-Porter. With good speed in this race, we should see this girl getting to the very outside on the home bend and letting down with her blistering turn of foot to record her first win of her preparation.
